Aggiungi al carrellohardcover. Condizione: Fair. First Edition. Publication: London, Effingham Wilson, 1830 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 224. Condition Report: Fair. The book presents with significant wear and damage expected of a volume of this age and grade, most notably a heavily split upper front joint that leaves the binding tender and somewhat loose, though the front board remains attached by the lower cords. The half-calf leather and marbled boards exhibit notable scuffs, rubbing, and edge-wear, with the corners heavily bumped and worn through to the underlying boards. The spine shows considerable rubbing along the hinges, with chipping at the head and tail, though the black leather title label and gilt tooling remain visible. Internally, the book is complete and the text remains perfectly legible, but the pages are affected by moderate foxing and spotting, particularly on the endpapers and preliminaries. Despite these substantial defects, this remains a structurally intact and historically significant copy of a scarce text, enriched by its provenance. Catalogue Note: A scarce first edition of Eleanor Dickinson's poem, The Mamluk. This copy is presented in an early nineteenth-century half-calf binding with marbled boards. The volume bears notable institutional provenance, having formerly belonged to the Glasgow University Library. The front pastedown features the university's engraved pictorial bookplate with the motto "Via Veritas Vita", which has been subsequently over-stamped with a "Withdrawn G.U.L." mark, alongside manuscript shelfmarks. Further adding to its bibliographic interest, the book contains the binder's ticket of "Carss, Glasgow" affixed to the upper corner of the front pastedown, indicating it was bound by John Carss & Co., a highly regarded firm of Scottish bookbinders active during the early nineteenth century. A circular gilt stamp at the foot of the spine further denotes its university history. The title is exceptionally scarce on the open market, with no other copies currently available in commerce and only a handful of copies held in global institutional collections. The Mamluk is an epic historical poem by Eleanor Dickinson, a Quaker poetess from the early nineteenth century. The work delves into the romanticised and martial world of the Mamluks, weaving a narrative of heroism, battle, and tragic fate, as encapsulated by the title page's epigraph: "The fate of her Heroes, ask Fame: she will tell, / They lived, were beloved, fought and conquered, and fell!". Dedicated to her brother, the Reverend Robert Blakey, the poem reflects the era's fascination with Orientalism and sweeping historical drama, offering a fascinating glimpse into early nineteenth-century women's poetry. N/A (illustratore).…
