Aggiungi al carrelloHard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Blue cloth gilt to faded spine. Slight water damage. Book plates to front paste down. Prologue & notes by the editors.xiv, 370pp. Text clean. Bindng tight. "Prefatory Note. DICKENS'S WRITINGS on the theater are far too entertaining to be presented only to scholars (although even…they are entitled to have fun) . This volume is therefore addressed to the general reader. It is selective, not exhaustive; but it ranges the gamut of Dickens's enthusiastic interest in plays, in actors, and in acting, and it includes all his more important comments, and some which may not even be widely familiar among scholars. It does not include the eight or nine plays he wrote, collaborated on, or gave some help in writing. Whatever vitality these may have had in the nineteenth century has trickled out of them, leaving them flabby and lifeless dummies. Anyone desiring through either skepticism or a gloomy sense of duty to read them may locate them in various other printed sources; he will not find them here. We wish rather that we had some of the imaginary plays Dickens only joked about writing, like his supposititious comedy called The One Thing Needed, or a Part is Better than the Whole, or "that soul-stirring drama" entitled The Larboard Fin, "which looks to me," Dickens said, "like an undiscovered play by Shakespeare surreptitiously modernized." We have included all the Sketches by Boz that are devoted to the entertainment world and to actors and acting, both amateur and professional. We have included most of the scenes from Dickens's novels in which mummers of all kinds appear - from clowns, giants, dwarfs, jugglers, and acrobats to performers in the comic and tragic drama. And from his periodical writings we have dramatic criticism, articles on the popular theater, comments on cabarets and minstrel shows, ballet dancers, pantomimes, and marionettes, even on ventriloquists, magicians, and "grimaciers." From Dickens's letters we have extracted a generous selection of passages dealing with plays and acting performances that amused or excited him, and several sequences that convey the enormous energy and enthusiasm - and the brilliant skill - that he flung into producing, directing, and acting in the plays he himself staged for amusement, charity, or profit. A number of the quoted texts are taken from previously unpublished autograph letters, and others are corrected from the original manuscripts. Finally, there is one of his half dozen or so speeches at the dinners of the General Theatrical Fund, and "Mr. Bob Sawyer's Party," one of the readings into which he threw so much of his genius as an actor. EDGAR JOHNSON. ELEANOR JOHNSON." Size: 8vo. Illustrated (illustratore).
