AUTHOR: Elena Lago (1991), graduate in contemporary art history at La Sapienza in Rome, is mainly concerned with artistic expressions at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, ranging from sculpture to painting and the applied arts. His most recent publications include: the monograph on the artist Herta Ottolenghi Wedekind, edited together with Giulia Gomiero and Sabrina Spinazze (2021) and the catalogue Giacomo Manzu. Legata alle più imp…ortanti personalità politiche e intellettuali dell'epoca, dai re di Romania al re Alfonso XIII di Spagna, da Charles de Gaulle a Winston Churchill, sino a Marcel Proust, Martha ha intrecciato la sua vita a quella dello scultore e architetto Domenico Rupolo (Caneva, 1861-1945), artefice del radicale ammodernamento, durato quasi venticinque anni, del palazzo dei Bibescu di Mogo?oaia: una vera e propria corte in cui Martha ha saputo intrecciare per decenni fitte trame politiche e diplomatiche negli interni decorati e arredati da Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, tra bizantinismi e suggestioni di Venezia. A coronamento del profondo sodalizio che lo legò a Martha, Rupolo ne eseguì nel 1933 il ritratto marmoreo, presentato in questo volume per la prima volta.
