While the family farm has often been idealized as a space of independence, hard work, and economic self-sufficiency, Ramey situates it instead as a hybrid class form - one that combines elements of ancient, feudal, and capitalist relations. She argues that the family farm's productivity and longevity have depended not simply on market efficiency or mechanization, but crucially on household-based exploitation, especially the unpaid labor of women and children. Drawing directly on Marx's theory of surplus labor, Ramey contends that the family farm cannot be fully understood through conventional class analysis. Rather, its internal structure reflects a distinctive configuration in which surplus is extracted within the household itself. Women's and children's labor, though often excluded from formal economic accounting, played a central role in subsidizing market production and enabling small farms to survive despite increasing commercial pressures and mechanized competition. The book is attentive to the ways gender shaped this hybrid class form. Ramey demonstrates that the intensification of agricultural production in the 20th century - commonly framed as a neutral process of technological advancement - was in fact underwritten by intensifying gendered exploitation. As state and market incentives pushed small farmers to expand production and adopt new technologies, intra-household labor demands increased, particularly for wives and daughters whose contributions remained unpaid and largely invisible. This structure, Ramey argues, helped to reproduce capitalist relations in rural America by allowing small-scale producers to function within market constraints while masking the social cost of their survival. Ramey's analysis draws from historical sources, census data, and prior feminist and Marxist scholarship.
