Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. 286pp. There is some discoloration on the back cover, though the front cover remains in pretty good condition. The front hinge is loose but not too bad. There is writing on the blank pages at the front and back, as is typical for these books, including a date of 1923, and there is pencil writing and underlining here and there. There are staple holes on the first two pages. The "Notes" section near the back, which contains information on the authors that appear in the book, has unfortunately been mutilated by someone evil wielding scissors, and many of the entries have been excised. Aggiungi al carrelloDecorative Cloth. Condizione: Very Good -. No Jacket. First Edition. The Tree-Dwellers(The Age of Fear) by Katharine Elizabeth Dopp was published by Rand McNally & Company in 1904. Not an ex-library copy, this 160-page, 107-year-old offering in VG- condition is the first volume in the author's Industrial and Social History Series geared for students in either the primary or intermediate grades. But for some very modest yellowing of its endpapers front and back as well as pages of text, and some light shelf wear at four outer tips of front and back cover boards, and on bottom edge of book's spine, this offering, for its advanced years, is in wonderful shape. From very rear of book, "This volume makes clear to the child how people lived before they had fire, how and why they conquered it, and the changes wrought in society by its use. The simple activities of gathering food, of weaving, building, taming fire, making use of stones for tools and weapons, wearing trophies, and securing cooperative action by means of rhythmic dances, are here shown to be the simple forms of processes which still minister to our daily needs." And, the author is compelled to mention in her Preface, ".In order to gain cumulative results of value in explaining our own institutions, the materials used have been selected from the life of Aryan peoples. Information regarding the early stages of Aryan life is meager. Enough has been established, however, to enable us to mark out the main lines of progress through the hunting, the fishing, the pastoral, and the agricultural stages, as well as to present the chief problems that confronted man in taking the first steps in the use of metals, and in the establishment of trade." What the non-Aryan children in the classroom were supposed to think and/or do while the rest were being taught from this text (have extended nap time?), I'm not at all sure. At any rate, this book is most definitely one interesting slice of American educational material, intended in this instance for the primary level, at the dawn of the last century. The book features some 60 very distinctive drawings in black and white, 14 of which are full-page renderings, by one Howard V. Brown. Also included are some 26 pages of "Suggestions To Teachers", which begins, "The test of a book is the service it can render. .It is the child of six and a half or seven years for whom this book is intended." Said suggestions explore such aspects of teaching as method, typical modes of activity(i.e., sand or clay modeling, gesture and pantomime, drawing and painting, field lessons), supplementary facts, animal life, and special suggestions(such as a brief list of other books to read that might assist in teaching from this particular text). You will find, Reader, that this is a most fascinating book on several levels. Thank you!. Howard V. Brown (illustratore).…

Tapa dura. Condizione: New. …
