Der Ebinger Pfarrer Wölfel gibt mit seiner Chronik einen vielseitigen Einblick in das Leben eines Dorfes zu einer Zeit, in der vieles im Wandel begriffen ist: Kriegsmüdigkeit und Schwarzhandel bestimmen die beiden letzten Jahre des Ersten Weltkrieges, die Nove…mberrevolution des Jahres 1918 führt zu einem raschen Ende von Kaiserreich und Monarchie, es folgt die unruhige Anfangsphase der Weimarer Republik. Wölfel schildert in seiner Chronik zunächst einmal die Ereignisse in Ebing bei Bamberg, die er geschickt mit den Geschehnissen im Reich und an der Front korrespondieren lässt. Darüber hinaus beschreibt er sehr genau Fühlen und Denken seiner Pfarrkinder und lässt in seine Aufzeichnungen immer wieder aufschlussreiche Kommentare einfließen, auch wenn er sich eigentlich um eine objektive Darstellung bemüht. Damit eröffnet Wölfel dem Leser Einblicke in die näheren damaligen Lebensumstände der Landbevölkerung, die im wesentlichen auf andere Ortschaften in Franken übertragbar sind. Auch Tageszeitungen versorgten ihre Leser immer wieder mit Neuigkeiten über den liberalkatholischen Pfarrer Johannes Grandinger aus der Erzdiözese Bamberg. Der Lebensweg Grandingers begann jedoch wesentlich unspektakulärer: Er wuchs in eher einfachen Verhältnissen in der aufstrebenden Industriestadt Nürnberg auf. 1891 wurde er in Bamberg zum katholischen Priester geweiht. Der rhetorisch wie journalistisch hochbegabte Kaplan machte wenig später vor allem durch die Gründung des 'St. Heinrichsblattes', der heutigen Kirchenzeitung für das Erzbistum Bamberg, auf sich aufmerksam. Durch sein sozialpolitisches Wirken als Pfarrer von Nordhalben im strukturschwachen Frankenwald verschaffte sich Grandinger großes Ansehen bei Freunden und Gegnern. Zur Sensationsfigur in ganz Deutschland wurde er jedoch, als er sich vom politischen Katholizismus distanzierte und sich stattdessen öffentlich zum liberalen Gedankengut bekannte. 1907 zog er als erster katholischer Geistlicher überhaupt - offiziell fraktionslos - für die Liberalen in den Bayerischen Landtag ein. Die Freiheit des Denkens und die freie Meinungsäußerung waren für Grandinger stets von zentraler Bedeutung. Wie kaum ein anderer Kleriker seiner Zeit hat er daher die Grenzen seiner persönlichen und politischen Freiheit ausgelotet, hierbei Tabus gebrochen und auch Hürden übersprungen, die vorher als unüberwindbar galten. 384 pp. Deutsch.
