Barrages have been built on the Nile River to regulate the water distribution and control the water flow to maximize profitability and minimize the water losses. To maintain the efficiency of the water distribution along the river, the MWRI is replacing the old barrages in which their life time is over by new ones. During testing the New Esna and Naga Hammadi Barrages designs and their hydraulic performance on a physical model, it was observed that the scour occurred immediately downstream the stilling basin and exceeded the expected values. In both cases significant design modifications have been introduced using trial and error based on expert's opinion. Different shapes of stilling basins were tested in order to investigate the performance of stilling basins effect on submerged hydraulic jump. The proposed designs were classified into four groups and each group consisted of two or three designs. 208 pp. Englisch.

In this study, an improved design for irrigation pipeline networks is investigated.Basic partial differential equations based on one-dimensional homogenous flow model are formulated and solved by the method of characteristics. The differential equations of momentum and continuity are developed for solving transient problem. For transient condition caused by pump failure, four different scenarios were considered to study the impact of column separation of the pipelines system. These scenarios are the steady state condition, transient condition without protection, transient condition with air vessel as a protection and transient condition with air vessel and two surge towers as a protection. Also, the impact of changing diameter and wall thickness of pipes, changing material type and polar moment of inertia of the pump on the magnitude of the maximum pressure heads and column separation were included in the study. The first is to study the flow field around a vertical bridge abutment for sandy soil and clayey soil. The second is to develop scour prediction formulas to predict scour pattern at a vertical bridge abutment for sandy soils and for clayey soils. The study also aims to investigate the difference between the scour pattern for sandy soils and that for clayey soils. A computer program is developed to get the equilibrium scour pattern around the bridge abutment and the development of scour depth with time. Diverse techniques were used to affect the flow pattern. Physical work was carried out to investigate and to evaluate the groins ability to protect the opposite bank of the diversion channel from erosion. A package of 2-d mathematical model based on finite element theory was used in attempt to simulate and predict the flow pattern surrounding a group of groins. The simulation is focused on the study of velocity in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Also, the working length of each group, the water level fluctuation and the geometry of scour holes were investigated.
