In absence of d.j. the color pictorial cover is stained, and the boards are badly scuffed, with serious abrasion of spine. Textblock is square but gutters are cracked. The dustjacket having survived, the gilt and illustration on the front board are fresh and vibrant. The dustjacket has chips at all four corners, shallow chipping at the top of the spine, a larger chip at the bottom of the spine, a closed tear across the spine. You needn't read it. yours heartily, Elwyn A. Barron. This work is the text of a play. Elwyn Alfred Barron was born in Lima, New York, in 1855. Educated at Robert College in Tennessee between 1868 and 1872, Barron worked at the Chicago Inter-Ocean in 1877. Until 1895 he was a drama critic and editorialist for this newspaper, which served as the primary source of news for the Midwestern and Western business community. His work brought him into the orbit of many renowned American actors of the period; out of this experience he published an admiring biography of the actor Lawrence Barrett in 1889. Barron also wrote plays, novels and poetry, including Robin Hood and Rosalind (1883), A Moral Crime (1885, with fellow Chicago journalist Morgan Bates) and The Viking (1888). Barron's work was dramatic and favored historical settings. Robin Hood and Rosalind, termed "a perfect piece of work," by one reviewer, and The Viking was set in what Lawrence Barrett called "the weird and mystical North." He collaborated with the English playwright Wilson Barrett; together they published the novel In Old New York in 1900. Between 1900 and 1916 Barron copyrighted 11 dramatic works. His romantic drama A Mountain Pink, again with Morgan Bates, was staged in Chicago in 1900. Lawrence Patrick Barrett (April 4, 1838 - March 20, 1891) was an American stage actor. Barrett began his career in 1853 in Detroit and made his first New York appearance in 1856. Barrett enlisted for the American Civil War in 1862. He later managed the California Theatre in San Francisco from 1868 to 1870 alongside John McCullough. Barrett performed a variety of roles, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. He was especially known for his portrayal of Cardinal Richelieu in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's drama. Barrett acted in London on multiple occasions and produced and starred in several plays. He frequently collaborated with fellow stage actor Edwin Booth, touring together and achieving immense success. Barrett's health began to decline in 1890, and he died in 1891 during a performance of Richelieu. His acting style was described as versatile and expressive. The Viking has been recognized as a work of longlasting cultural importance and has been republished in this century.…
