A pamphlet endorsing the Gearhart Bill to create a national park encompassing Kings Canyon, Redwood Mountain and General Grant National Park. Congress passed an amended bill on March 4, 1940 creating Kings Canyon National Park which included the four square mile General Grant National Park. The bill also provided that the President, by proclamation, might add certain public lands to the General Grant Grove section. On June 21, 1940 such a proclamation added several sections along the General's Highway including the Redwood Mountain and Canyon area. Publication no. 63 of the Emergency Conservation Committee (ECC), with the subtitle: "No Economic Need, But Only Commercial Greed, the Obstacle to the Mount Olympus Park. Uncommonly found, these pamphlets were written by Rosalie Edge (Mrs. C. N. Edge), the ECC chairman and a legendary environmental activist. This eight-page pamphlet (covers included) is firmly against Bill H.R. 4724, which would exclude from a proposed Mount Olympus National Park "the larger part of its finest forests." Ultimately it urges readers to write the House Committee on the Public Lands with their objection. The last page reprints a related editorial in the New YorkHerald Tribune. Apparently this pamphlet helped create such a stir that President Teddy Roosevelt was compelled to visit the proposed park, whereupon driving through a clearcut he said,"I hope the lumberman who is responsible for this is roasting in hell" (see this National Park Service article for more on this history and a great photo of Rosalie Edge). The park was established in 1938. With an illustrated map of the proposed park and contentious areas on the front and on the second page a photo of an old growth Douglas fir by Willard Van Name. Laid in is a green donation slip for the ECC and included is the original manila mailing envelope (with a one-cent stamp and a Grand Central Annex cancel mark) to the recipient in Vermont.
