Original red cloth boards with bright black titling on spine. No ownership marks. 8 pages of Illustrations / photographs on plates. Maps. 298 pages clean and tight. Edward, Prince of Wales - the `Black Prince' of popular legend - was hailed in his day as the flower of chivalry. To contemporaries he seemed the epitome of all the virtues of the knightly caste: valiant in war, merciful to fallen enemies, loyal to his father the King, faithful to a noble wife, generous to his friends, idealistic in his ventures. From his debut in war in his teens to his untimely death at the age of forty-five, the Black Prince was the wonder of Christendom. Yet in recent years this long-held concept of the Prince's character and achievements has been challenged on several counts. First, he has been branded as a blood-thirsty murderer, the instigator of the massacre of helpless civilians at Limoges in 1370. It has been firmly pointed out that Edward was merciful only within the strict code of chivalry: that is, he could show mercy to fellow-members of the military elite but scarcely deigned to notice the misery and fear of the common man. Historians have also pointed out the Prince's mistakes in government and his devious dealings in international diplomacy and, from such evidence, have radically altered the current opinion of Edward. In her new study of the Black Prince's life and times, Barbara Emerson has sought to weigh and sift all the evidence. Analysing his character and actions, in the light of the values of his age, she produces a more balanced view of this much-misunderstood, but fascinating, man. Barbara Emerson was born in Cheshire, and took an honours degree in modern history at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She worked for a time as a civil servant and then taught history. She now lives in Brussels, is married to an economist and has three children. The Black Prince is her first book.
