Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. viii+339 pages with diagrams, illustrations, tables and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") rebound in wrappers with red spine and no lettering. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5238). First German edition. This has good claims to be considered one of the strongest tournaments ever held in England. The first Hastings tournament witnessed both the rise and fall of a number of brilliant careers. At the beginning of their eminence were Lasker, the 26-year-old world champion who was playing in his first major event outside Germany; Teichmann, Janowski and Schlechter (at 21 the youngest entry), who had made their international debut at Leipzig 11 months earlier, and the surprise tournament winner, 22-year-old Pillsbury of New York. At the opposite end of the scale were such venerable names as Blackburne, Bird, Mason, Steinitz and Tchigorin. Central to the drama of the tournament was the unavailing struggle of these older players to maintain their footing against the new generation of continental masters. It was a "decisive and momentous meeting of the Old and New Schools - a changing of the guard." It is legend that Pillsbury, on going to Hastings, insisted on stopping at a quiet hotel, as he "meant to win." He did, making a total of 16 1/2 (+15-3=3) out of a possible 21 points and taking home the first prize of 150 British pounds. Next came Tchigorin (=14-3=4) with the second prize, and Lasker (=14-4=3) for third. Condition: Rebound in wrappers with bumped corners, title slightly age darkened and chipped at head edge else about very good.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. viii+200 pages with, diagrams and tables. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 4 3/4") bound in red cloth with original wrapper tipped to front cover. (Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5218) First edition. The 3rd Deutscher Schachkongress took place in Nuremberg in 1883. It included the 3rd Meisterturnier (masters' tournament) organized by the Deutscher Schachbund (DSB); the first two were Leipzig (1879) and Berlin (1881). As in the previous edition, the round robin tournament was an international event, pitting German masters against the best of Europe at the time. Germany was represented by its usual field of strong masters - including Louis and Wilfried Paulsen, Max Lange, and the winner of the Berlin Hauptturnier (1881), Curt von Bardeleben. England was represented by James Mason, Henry Edward Bird, and the previous Meisterturnier winner, Joseph Blackburne. Isidor Gunsberg and Max Weiss represented the Austro-Hungarian empire, and Simon Winawer had journeyed from Poland. The contests that ensued were hard fought and showcased the brilliance of the best players at the time. Winawer, who had shared first in Vienna with the great Wilhelm Steinitz the previous year, finished sole first here with the score of fourteen points out of eighteen games. Blackburne almost duplicated his finish from Berlin two years earlier, defeating tournament winner Winawer in their head-to-head game, but his greater number of draws was only good enough for second place, half a point behind. Mason took third, and the next places were taken by German masters Johann Berger and newly titled master von Bardeleben. Finally, this was a last hurrah for Winawer. He had been one of the world's strongest chess masters for the past 15 years, but his poor showing at London earlier in the year convinced him to retire. It was only by being ambushed by the tournament organizers in Nuremberg (he had traveled there to see a dentist) that he was convinced into participating, making this his last great international chess tournament victory. Lange forfeited his last five rounds. There were also two forfeits in the last round: Wilfried Paulsen against his brother Louis, and Bier against Mason. The Nuremberg Hauptturnier (1883) that ran concurrently with the Meisterturnier was won by a young Siegbert Tarrasch, qualifying him for DSB's 4th Meisterturnier in Hamburg (1885). Condition: Lacks frontispiece, corners bumped and rubbed, stain to wrapper and spine ends, old sticker to spine, shaken else about good of a scarce tournament book.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. viii+228 pages with diagrams and tables lacks frontispiece. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in half leather over black boards with gilt lettering to spine. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5210) First edition. The Deutscher Schachbund (DSB, "German Chess Federation") was founded on 18 July 1877, with Hofrat Rudolf von Gottschall as Chairman and Hermann Zwanzig as General Secretary. The Leipzig (1877) tournament was organized by the Mitteldeutscher Schachbund, but over the next two years, 62 chess clubs would become DSB members, and the first official DSB Kongress took place at Schützenhaus in Leipzig in July 1879. The DSB then held their first Meisterturnier (Master's tournament) (this page). This started out quite modest: three invitations were accepted by the Austrian chess masters Berthold Englisch, Karl Pitschel and Adolf Schwarz. The remaining nine seats went to German masters: Louis and Wilfried Paulsen, Max Bier, Ernst Flechsig, Fritz Riemann, Emil Schallopp, Arnold Schottländer, Johannes Minckwitz and Carl Wemmers. The field and format were limited, with two rounds being played on most days. The 2nd Deutscher Schachkongress ("German chess congress") was organized by Hermann Zwanzig and Emil Schallopp, and took place in Berlin from August to September 1881. It included the 2nd Meisterturnier (master's tournament) organized by the Deutscher Schachbund (DSB) in the two years since Berthold Englisch won the first at Leipzig (1879). A large field of German masters shared the board with many of the best that Europe had to offer. The brightest lights among the German participants were Louis Paulsen and his brother Wilfried, and Johannes Minckwitz. Great Britain was represented by Joseph Henry Blackburne and James Mason. Mikhail Chigorin travelled over from Russia, and two great masters from Poland, Simon Winawer and Johannes Zukertort, also participated. The 18 collected masters was a field of strength that had not been seen since Baden-Baden (1870). The games were fiercely fought, as few draws were recorded, and a formula from this event would serve as a template for all future chess congresses in Germany before the Great War. Condition: Rebound in half leather, lacks frontispiece portrait else a very good copy of a scarce tournament book.

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5208) First edition. The revival of France after the Franco-Prussian War was demonstrated by a world exhibition. Paris was a city of light for the first time. A great chess tournament took place in the exhibition hall from 17 June to 31 July 1878. The participation of George Henry Mackenzie and James Mason made it the first intercontinental tournament in Europe. Eleven double rounds were played. Wilhelm Steinitz was present as reporter for The Field. The event was won by Szymon Winawer and Johannes Hermann Zukertort, who decided to share the first prize after they each won a play-off game. They drew twice, so another play-off was necessary. Zukertort won both games and gained the first prize. Mackenzie defeated Henry Edward Bird twice in the struggle for the fourth place. Winners of the prizes were: Zukertort (1000 Frans + two Sèvres vases), Winawer (500 F + one vase), Joseph Henry Blackburne (1500 F), Mackenzie (1000 F), Bird (500 F), and the ill Adolf Anderssen (200 F). Zukertort's vases were priced at 5800 Francs. He needed cash, and it took three days until he could sell them much below the estimated value. Other participants in the tournament in finishing order were Englisch, Rosenthal, Clerc, Gifford and Karl Pitschel. Condition: Previous owner's label to front pastedown. Stain at fore edges, corners gently bumped, some internal markings and dot next to the games else very good.
