Schlittler stellt die damals verfügbaren Untersuchungsmethoden (Ohrenspiegelbefund, Funktionsprüfungen, Röntgenbefunde) zusammen, arbeitet die wichtigsten Symptome eines Mittelohrcholesteatoms heraus und zeigt, wie aus der Kombination von klinischem Bild und Untersuchungsbefunden frühzeitig auf ein operationsbedürftiges Cholesteatom geschlossen werden kann. Betont wird der Stellenwert der rechtzeitigen Diagnose zur Vermeidung schwerer Komplikationen (z.B. intrakranieller Folgezustände) und zur Indikationsstellung für die operative Sanierung.

Klinisch-diagnostische Abhandlung über das Empyem der Warzenzellen (Mastoiditis) als Komplikation der Mittelohrentzündung. Schlittler stellt die charakteristischen Zeichen der Mastoiditis (Druckschmerz, Schwellung und Rötung über dem Warzenfortsatz, Abstehen der Ohrmuschel, Verschlechterung der Allgemeinsymptome) zusammen und grenzt sie gegenüber einfachen Mittelohrentzündungen und Pseudomastoiditis ab. Ein zweiter Schwerpunkt ist die Unterscheidung von sogenannter genuiner (primärer) Otitis media und sekundärer Otitis media, je nach primärem Entzündungsherd und aufsteigendem Infektionsweg, mit Konsequenzen für Verlauf, Komplikationsrisiko und rechtzeitige Indikationsstellung zur operativen Therapie (Mastoidoperation). Typische Arbeit aus der Siebenmann-Schule, die die klinische Diagnostik von Mastoiditis und Mittelohrentzündung systematisiert und speziell auf die Bedürfnisse des praktischen Arztes hin zuschneidet.
