L'iniziativa di invitare personalità straniere della letteratura e della cultura a scrivere su Ungaretti, fu presa perché questa raccolta di scritti uscisse in occasione dei 70 anni del poeta. Dovevano essere testimonianze e saggi di autori stranieri e italiani. Intanto la rivista Letteratura, con Bonsanti, De Luca e Lucchese prepararono, proprio per il compleanno, quel numero unico del settembre-dicembre 1958, al quale collaborarono i migliori critici, poeti, scrittori, e che resta un prezioso contributo bibliografico per lo studio dell'opera del poeta. Vari motivi di forza maggiore hanno ritardato sino ad oggi la pubblicazione. Ma non è stato del tutto un danno. Essi hanno perso così il carattere più stretto di circostanza che potevano avere per assumerne uno che più ci preme di netta e chiara indicazione critica. Devo ringraziare particolarmente Bona de Pisis, Jean Lescure, Luciano Rebay e Bernard Wall.
