Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. ENYEDI Ó, János (of Benedek): Falusi emberek patikája. A' falun lakó minden keresztyén valláson lévö tisztelendö papokhoz, melyben a' falusi embereknek leg-nevezetesebb nyavalyáinak orvoslások irattak meg. [Pharmacy of Village People. To all reverend priests of Christian faith residing in villages, in which the cures for the most notable ailments of village people are written.] [By János Enyedi Ó of Benedek, royal surgeon alongside the imperial and royal honorable noble salt office of Parajd.] (Kolozsvár [Cluj-Napoca]), 1801. Author's edition - Printed with the types of Márton Hochmeister. XX. 270 [2] p. (Careful restoration on the margins of three leaves of the index and on the last leaf, affecting the text by only a few letters.) Sole edition. Bound in a later, demanding, fine full-leather binding with a ribbed spine, decorated with gilding and blind tooling. A meticulously preserved and extremely rare volume. The work is a much-needed, practical, Hungarian-language medical handbook, written under the influence of Enlightenment ideals by an experienced mining surgeon for the local intelligentsia of the countryside: priests and pastors. Since medical care was unavailable in the villages, the author turned to the only literate and educated stratum (the clergy), preparing them to recognize the most common diseases (ailments). The book contains therapies and recipes ("pharmacies") that could be prepared at home from locally available medicinal plants and simple materials. It serves as a vital, early milestone of domestic Hungarian-language health education. The book is not an isolated phenomenon, but rather the domestic adaptation of a contemporary genre, "pastoral medicine." At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, the state realized that it could utilize the church's extensive network to improve public health. Priests became the "quasi-doctors" and public health inspectors of the countryside. Enyedi's work is a direct continuation of the Hungarian-language medical literary tradition established by Ferenc Pápai Páriz with his 1690 Pax Corporis (The Peace of the Body). Enyedi consciously carried on this lineage but defined his target audience much more specifically (the clergy). In 1801, during the era of Hungarian language reform, publishing a medical textbook in Hungarian was a serious statement of science policy. Instead of traditional Latin-language medicine, the author opted for practicality and comprehensibility. The work is a perfect Eastern European parallel to the 1761 bestseller by the famous Swiss physician Samuel Auguste Tissot (Avis au peuple sur sa santé - Advice to the People on Their Health). For international researchers, Enyedi's work demonstrates how pan-European enlightened public health ideals were adapted to the specific conditions (multinational, filled with isolated villages) of the eastern periphery of the Habsburg Empire. Ever since Bernardino Ramazzini (the father of occupational medicine), the medicine of mining has been a prominent branch of global medical history. Although Enyedi wrote the book for villagers, as a salt mining surgeon in Parajd, he gained his experience in one of the harshest physical and toxicological environments in contemporary Europe (salt dust, darkness, extreme accidents). Behind the trauma management and surgical advice in the book lies this massive empirical knowledge of treating early industrial workers. For international medical anthropology, this book is a historical document of the transitional period when academic medicine (university-trained physicians) already existed but had not yet reached the villages. Consequently, the state and science were forced to "inoculate" theology and the religious network with secular science for the sake of survival. ( O,O ) /)__) , .…
