Nel 1753 fu approvato il progetto del Grande Ospedale degli Infermi, costruito sull'area del monastero e della chiesa di San Gerolamo, completato nel 1762 per accogliere invalidi e mendicanti. Le spese furono coperte dal duca, dalle comunità locali, dalle Arti, dalle confraternite, dalla Congregazione dell'Abbondanza, da donazioni private e dai proventi delle prime soppressioni ecclesiastiche, con un contributo di papa Benedetto XIV.
