CONTENTS: Is the drama an extinct species? -- The American drama, 1944-1954 -- What is theatre? -- Taking Ibsen personally -- The pro and con of political theatre -- Letter to a would-be playwright -- The theatre of commitment. -- The publication in 1964 of Eric Bentley's magisterial The Life of the Drama established once and for all his position (if it had ever been in doubt) as our most distinguished critic of the theatre. It has become one of a series of stimulating, unconventional, deeply thoughtful and radical new looks at what makes up the theatre and the theatre experience which began with The Playwright as Thinker, continued through In Search of Theatre, and expressed itself in a series of memorable anthologies such as the volumes of The Modem Theatre and The Classic Theatre. As drama critic for The New Republic he established and maintained one of the few intellectually serious positions ever held in this dismal field in New York. The Theatre of Commitment, a long and brilliant essay, speaks for the problems of political engagement in the theatre, as exemplified in the work of Brecht, Peter Weiss and Rolf Hochhuth in particular. It is supported by a dazzling group of provocative pieces dealing with the most important general problems of the theatre, but always supported by the particular instances of which a life committed to the theatre (as is Eric Bentley's) has so many to offer.
