Paperback. Condizione: VG. Very nice and clean. Text free of highlighting and writing. Tightly bound. ?I watched the waves, seized my chance, turned, and headed shoreward. Fifteen feet from shore I caught a crest and barreled toward the beach. ROUGH LANDING, TOO FAR DOWN THE SLOPE. The prow hit gravel, the wave washed under me, the stern sank and the skiff slid seaward down the beach. A wave broke over my head and filled the boat and it sank, the tip of the prow poking above water. I sat, and my hipboots filled with water, the waves broke over my head and the boat began to fill with wave-tossed gravel. Water swirled chest deep, the waves poured water down my back and smashed my gas cans on the beach. JUMP! YOU FOOL! DON?T JUST SIT HERE AND DROWN! I stood in the crashing surf and took the kicker off the stern, lugged it onto the beach, collected gas cans, grabbed my ax and cut the lashings, threw my gear ashore, jerked out the floor boards, dove down and' fished up the shotgun and the stove pipe. I stood on the beach and an imp sat laughing on the prow of my wave-washed boat. The clouds let the sun through and the whilte-caps sparkled and I roared and laughed and wondered how the hell to get my boat out of the water." 158 pages. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Eloise Forrer (illustratore). 1st Edition. A clean, unmarked and unread-looking copy.Glossy boards binding, no dust jacket, as issued. Children's book aid to be for 8-9 year olds. Adventures of a black cat. Summary: "A gently magical adventure in the lives of a remarkable seafaring cat (who was once a pirate) and his human friends. The tale is set in a fishing village somewhere, though it sounds very like Alaska's Aleutians, and on a cool sea both dreamlike and dangerous" From the Publisher Author Forrer, who is also a builder, commercial fisherman, and regent of the University of Alaska, has previously published the novel From the Nets of a Salmon Fisherman (Doubleday). Illustrator Forrer, who is also the author's mother, is a long-time teacher in the rural Alaska school system. With her husband Paul, Eloise Forrer is noted for helping develop successful art programs in isolated rural schools. About the Author Eric Forrer's parents spent eighteen years teaching for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and as a consequence of their employment at remote sites, he received his primary and secondary education by correspondence. He has had a varied career in boat-building, ocean freight, commercial fishing, construction, and contracting. Doubleday published his first and only novel From the Nets of a Salmon Fisherman in 1973. He was appointed to the University of Alaska Board of Regents in 1989 but managed to escape with his skin intact after a full and interesting term. Forrer, his wife Sally (for whom Bucket was written), and his son Leif live in Juneau, Alaska. The daughter of Pennsylvania Dutch parents who lived a life of employment in the trades, small business ventures, and connected family farms, Eloise Forrer graduated from the Eastman School of Music as a concert harpist. But the Great Depression, the Second World War, and her own family intervened in her career as a musician. With her husband Paul Forrer, she taught grade school at remote sites in Arizona and Alaska, and for her entire teaching career she was able to keep her harp with her. She played harp and piano regularly for students and town folk. Forrer illustrated Bucket using techniques developed by her husband during their years in the bush. The method involves colored carbon paper, a household iron, and immense amounts of time. (Location: shelf III).

A comprehensive guide to public sector collaboration with private and nonprofit organizations for better service delivery Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration tackles the issues inherent in partnerships with nongovernmental actors for public service delivery, highlighting the choices available and the accompanying challenges and opportunities that arise. Based on research, interviews with public, private and nonprofit sector leaders, and considerable analysis of organizations involved in public-private-nonprofit collaborations, the book provides insight into cross-sector collaboration at the global, federal, state, and local levels. Through an examination of the primary modes of cross-sector collaboration, including collaborative contracting, partnerships, networks, and independent public services providers, the book presents a clear case for how public managers can assess the trade-offs and use these options to improve public service delivery. Nonprofit organizations, businesses, and third-party contractors are increasingly partnering with government to deliver public services. Recognizing the types of collaborative approaches, and their potential to solve public policy problems is quickly becoming a major task for public managers, with new methods and techniques constantly emerging. Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration provides specific examples and a framework for public managers to make strategic choices about how to engage private and nonprofit actors in delivering public goods and services while ensuring the public interest. The book provides effective methods for choosing, designing, governing, and evaluating networks, partnerships, and independent public-services providers, with in-depth discussion encompassing: Analysis and engagement of cross-sector organizationsFostering democratic accountability in the public interestCollaborative approaches (including contracts, networks and partnerships) and the issues associated with each type of arrangementLeadership and organizational learning in cross-sector collaboration Included case studies illustrate effective application of the concepts and methods described, providing both practicing public and nonprofit managers and public policy/administration students with insight into these emerging strategic alliances. The first comprehensive guide to public governance collaborations, Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration is an important and timely contribution to the field of public management.
