Sie können auch auf Eigenschwingungen einzelner Körperteile zurückgehen oder auf den in der Stille hörbar werdenden eigenen Herzrhythmus. "Körperschall" nennt der Breslauer Akustiker Erich Waetzmann diese nicht-pathologischen subjektiven Schallerscheinungen, die er auf dieselbe Weise hörbar - und damit objektivierbar - zu machen versucht, wie den "Erdschall" beim Abhören feindlicher Geräusche im Krieg unter der Erde: "Überhaupt ist das Problem, irgendwelchen Schall aus dem Erdboden oder aus dem menschlichen Körper aufzunehmen, grundsätzlich das gleiche", schreibt er 1927 in einem zusammenfassenden Artikel über das Geophon und gibt zu bedenken, dass man "auf diese Zusammenhänge etwas mehr achten" solle. Tatsächlich gehen die Zusammenhänge über die bloße Technik des Abhorchens hinaus. Waetzmann war 1914 als einfacher Soldat eingezogen und wenig später beim Chef der Feldtelegrafie als Oberingenieur beschäftigt worden. 1917 kam er zur Artillerieprüfungskommission in Berlin und leitete die militärwissenschaftliche Versuchsstation in Friedrichshagen. "In Frankreich und Rußland", kommentiert ein Nachruf die ersten Kriegsjahre, "kontrollierte er die Abhorchstationen vor der vordersten Linie in nächtlichen Patrouillengängen selbst, überwachte Anlage und Wirkungsweise der von ihm konstruierten Erdtelephone (Geophone) in den durch Unterminierung gefährdeten Frontabschnitten." Die Ununterscheidbarkeitszone an der Front also, jene Horchstollen, in denen objektive und subjektive Schallerscheinungen in der Wahrnehmung der Pioniere oft nicht voneinander zu trennen sind, stellt das Labor bereit, in dem Waetzmann sein Geophon entwickelt und perfektioniert. Die Horchvorrichtung gilt der Verstärkung des Bodenschalls. Den eigenen Körper hört der Soldat in den Stollen selbstverständlich nicht ab. Dass es für das Ohr aber "keine vollkommene Stille" gibt, da "auch nach Ausschaltung aller äußeren, schwingungsmäßigen Reize Schallempfindungen" stets vorhanden sind, wie Waetzmann später formuliert, gehört zu den Erfahrungen des Hörkriegs. Die Ununterscheidbarkeit von Erd- und Körperschall scheint die Frage nach der Objektivierung subjektiver Geräusche in den Stollen selbst hervorzubringen. In systematischen Versuchen wird Waetzmann während der Nachkriegsjahre beide Phänomene weiter verfolgen: die "Ausbreitung elastischer Wellen in der Erdoberfläche" und die "subjektiven Schallerscheinungen". Hören in der Stille heißt sein letztes Werk, das 1937 langjährige Forschungsexperimente über subjektive Geräusche zusammenträgt. Vom Krieg unter der Erde hat sich der Diskurs über das Hören bereits abgelöst. Explizit ist vom "Ohr im Kriege" hier keine Rede mehr. Waetzmann macht beim "Hören in der Stille" vor allem sich selbst zur Versuchsperson: In erster Linie werde "über die eigenen Beobachtungen des Verfassers berichtet", kündigt er an. Ein Vierteljahr lang habe er aber auch Experimente mit Mitarbeitern seines Instituts durchgeführt, die "in subjektiv-akustischen Beobachtungen besonders gut geschult" seien. Durch Anstoßen der Ohrresonatoren, des Trommelfells, anderer Körperteile oder durch willkürliche Muskelspannungen könnten "subjektive Geräusche" erregt werden. Oft genügten fast unmerkliche Bewegungen, um die verschiedensten Töne deutlich hervortreten zu lassen. Andere dagegen würden nur hörbar, wenn man die Ohreingänge mit Wachs oder Ohro-pax gut verschließe. Vom "tiefen Brummen", das sich der unteren Hörgrenze nähert, über "helle Töne" der mittleren Oktaven bis hin zu einem "feinen, spitzen Klingen" in der Gegend der oberen Hörgrenze sei an Körpertönen und -geräuschen alles .
