4to (11.5" x 9.25"), pebbled blue paper over boards, embossed gold design on front cover, cord ties at spine. 57 real photo postcards (3.5" x 4.5"), 52 mounted and 5 unattached; plus 1 unattached color photomechanical pc; most images titled in negative. CONDITION: Very good, strong tonality light wear to photos; occasional chipping and small losses at edges. An evocative album documenting the Northern California lumbering industry in the early 20th century. Comprising images by at least eight identified photographers, this album begins with a range of photos of lumberjacks posing in front of massive felled, or soon-to-be felled, Redwood trees in Humboldt County. Images show the transportation of lumber, the process of cutting the trees, and the loading of logs into a river. A series of images picture a visit to the Stump House in Eurekaa fifty-foot long home carved from a redwood log that welcomed visitors and had a gift shop. Photos taken in Weed show the town from an elevated view, Mount Shasta (seen from several different vantage points), stores, hotels, and the Weed Lumber Company, its mill, and mill pond. Photos taken in Scotia picture street scenes, Scotia's monorail, trout fishing, an aerial view of Pacific Lumber Company's massive lumber factory, a Redwood log on a log slip, and "unloading the logs into the mill pond." Several images document the Redwood forests in Bull Creek Flat, one image showing a burl. A number of images picture forests and trees in Carson Woods in Fortuna and one color postcard shows two men "cutting down big Redwoods in Humboldt County, California." An image by R. E. Stinson shows Mt. Lassen's Eruption on 22 August 1914. Other images show Susanville "from the air"; Yreka Inn in Yreka; Shamrock Auto Court on Highway 99 near Yreka (advertising modern cabins and running water); the town of Weott; and a street scene on the State Highway in Yreka. A substantial representation of the early twentieth century lumbering scene in northern California.

Photograph. 14-1/4 by 11 inches (mount); 9 by 7 inches (oblong image). Mount caption: Scene at Hoopa, Humboldt County, California. A. W. Ericson was the leading (and best) commercial photographer in Humboldt County from about 1880 to the 1930s. He traveled to the Hoopa reservation to take photographs on many occasions. In this scene a man stands amidst large oak trees, with Fort Gaston buildings just visible through a clearing in the distance. Humboldt State University holds most of the surviving negatives for Ericson's photographs. This image corresponds to glass plate negative 1999.02.0168. Ericson sold his prints for decades with varying styles of captions on the mounts. As yet no definitive dating of the captions has been undertaken. However, this style probably dates from the 1920s, when the woman from whose estate we acquired this image lived in Humboldt County. Very good. Medium contrast image; mount with a few small stains and two pin holes in the corners. Dated based on mount legend type style (Palmquist logo style I).

Original albumen photograph of "Digger Indians" (a pejorative term since abandoned) measuring 7 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches. On photographers mount measuring 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches with text printed below the image (title as above and "copies can be had from Ericson Bro's, Arcata, Cal.). The image shows 13 The Wiyot people or Yurok People posed as a group with six sitting and seven standing, with a river and tress in the background. All are wearing Western clothes. Apparently this once belonged (it is #8) to George E. Anderson of Berkeley with his info on the verso. Mild browning to mount edges but image bright and clean."A.W. (Gus) Ericson took up photography after he had lived in Humboldt County about nine years. From 1869 - 1876 he had lived in Trinidad while working in the Hooper Brothers lumbering enterprise and then in a retail store. In 1876 he settled in Arcata and started a career as the proprietor of a series of retail businesses. As was common in dry goods stores of that time, he sold a variety of goods and services, from pharmaceuticals and stationery to a printing service. He began to take pictures of local businesses and landscapes and place them for sale in his store windows. Eventually Ericson also began to receive commissions for photographs and he could concentrate solely on photography. His brother Richard Ericson (1843 - 1924) joined A.W. upon his arrival from Sweden in 1882, and joined the operation. The publication Eureka and Humboldt County around 1896 notes that Richard was also considered a photographer" (Humboldt State).Together with another (similar) image of a group of native Americans; this being an 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 glossy photograph (it is #4 of Andersen's collection). The legend on the verso places this photograph 'below bridge at Berry's Ranch.".
