Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Recounts the complex history of this understudied masterwork and its important, and influential, position in Caravaggio's oeuvre. The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew (16067) marks a crucial turning point in the life and artistic development of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (15711610). One of seven Caravaggio paintings in US collections, and the only altarpiece, it exemplifies the influential tenebristic style the artist developed during his rise to fame in Rome, while signaling the introduction of an even grittier realism in his work. This is the first book-length publication to consider this understudied masterwork in its complex historical and geographic contexts, and to incorporate the findings of a recent conservation study in its assessment of the work. AUTHOR: Erin E. Benay is Climo Junior Professor of Renaissance and Baroque Art, Department of Art History, Case Western Reserve University, OH. SELLING POINTS: . This volume focuses on one enigmatic painting as a way of addressing larger issues related to the mobility of objects in the seventeenth century and the dissemination of artistic style. . Marking a crucial turning point in Caravaggio's life and artistic development, the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew exemplifies the artist's famous tenebristic style, developed during his rise to fame in Rome, and simultaneously signals a new, grittier realism in his work. Inspired both by a Spanish patron and by the urban topography of Naples, a city three times the size of Rome in Caravaggio's day, the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew became a mobile portent of Caravaggio's stylistic revolution when the viceroy brought it with him to Valladolid in 1610. Recounting the complex history of this masterwork and its understudied position in Caravaggio's oeuvre, this book reveals the ways in which the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew functioned first as a devotional aid and subsequently as a harbinger of Caravaggism abroad.

An exploration of the rich history of printmaking at Cleveland's Karamu House, a center of Black arts, culture, and community since 1915Winner of the 2026 IFPDA Book Award Karamu House, founded as a settlement house in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1915, is one of the preeminent homes of Black arts, culture, and community in America. Noted for its theater program, Karamu House also hosts a rich legacy in the graphic arts. Printmaking workshops open to artists and community alike launched in the 1930s, allowing a young Langston Hughes-as one notable example-to experiment with print. Linked with printmaking's ethos of accessibility and democracy, a group including Elmer W. Brown, Hughie Lee-Smith, Charles L. Salle?e Jr., and William E. Smith-some of the most prominent Black printmakers of the WPA era-founded Karamu Artists, Inc. Reproductions of works by such artists are accompanied by essays situating the prints, the artists, and this locus of Black arts and culture in the histories it shaped. These writings are complemented by an interview with printmaker and Karamu alumnus Curlee Raven Holton. Distributed for the Cleveland Museum of Art Exhibition Schedule: Cleveland Museum of Art(March 23-August 17, 2025).
