During World War I, his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947, he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society.
