Pen & Ink Original Drawing. Condizione: Very Good+. Original signed Ernest Fiene watercolor/pen & ink on wove heavyweight cream colored stock. A whimsical nature scene created as the front panel of this home made holiday greeting card by artist Ernest Fiene, with sentiments from Fiene and his wife, Jeanette, to his brother's family- Paul Fiene and his wife (Rosella Hartman), and thier child Schnick. "Greetings To Paul, Rosella and Shnick From Ernest and Jeanette". "Jeanette" was Fiene's wife, Jeanette Fiene (nee Jeanette Etare), who was married to Ernest Fiene from 1921-1945 (thus dating the piece). "Paul" refers to Paul Fiene, Ernest's older brother and an artist in his own right (sculptor). "Rosella" refers to Rosella Hartman, Paul Fiene's wife and also a highly recognized artist. "Schnick" is (presumably) the child of Paul and Rosella. Front panel, with image, measures 7 1/2" x 5 3/4" (sheet) with the oval bordered nature scene measuring approximately 6 1/4" x 4 3/4". Signed by the artist directly above lower border, just to the left of center. CONDITION: faint foxing in the margins; miild creasing to upper tip of card; soiling at fold, inside of card very clean. A lovely piece, in very well preserved condition. SUBJECT MATTER: The scene features 3 deer grazing peacefully in a stylized forest setting with a fabulous, ferocious tiger about to pounce. The tiger has his jaws open, big sharp teeth showing, and claws extended. While stylized deer like this appear often in Fiene's work, tigers do not; we searched in vain for other examples of tigers in Fiene's work and found none. So.rare! The whole scene is rendered in very thick black ink, worked with both pen and brush. Image is on the front panel of a single sheet folded once to create an oblong holiday greeting card with handwritten message on the inside panel. A fantastic, exhuberant, piece most likely created sometime between 1925-1935 given the dates of the two family's marriages and divorces.
