Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. v, [1], 346 pages. Appendix A-D. Figures. Maps. Tables. References. Index. Ernest J. Sternglass, Joseph J. Mangano, and William McDonnell were members of The Radiation and Public Health Project. Inscribed by Sternglass inside the front cover. Inscription reads To Henry and Jenna The evidence is there, but the public does not know of it. With warmest regards Ernst Oct. 12, 97. Jay Martin Gould earned his bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College and his doctorate from Columbia University. In 1985, Dr. Gould founded the Radiation and Public Health Project, an antinuclear research group. Jay M. Gould was a statistician and epidemiologist whose contention that radiation from nuclear power plants was causing high rates of cancer in surrounding neighborhoods made him a leading figure in the antinuclear movement. , Dr. Gould routinely warned that low levels of radiation from nuclear reactors were far more dangerous than commonly believed and were quietly poisoning Americans. Ernest Joachim Sternglass (24 September 1923 - 12 February 2015) was a professor emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh and director of the Radiation and Public Health Project. He is an American physicist and author, best known for his controversial research on the health risks of low-level radiation from atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons and from nuclear power plants. Joseph Mangano, MPH, MBA, is the Executive Director for the Radiation and Public Health Project in New York and has served the organization since 1989. From the rear cover of this 346-page book: "'The Enemy Within' exposes the startling correlation between deadly diseases and proximity to nuclear reactors. Using data from the National Cancer Institute, state health departments, and the Center for Disease Control, author Jay Gould offers official statistical evidence proving that residents of nuclear counties - the 1,321 counties within 100 miles of a reactor - suffer disproportionately from the interaction of nuclear fallout with industrial pollutants and other sources of urban stress. Gould examines why women in nuclear counties have such a hugely inflated risk of breast cancer, why there are large numbers of premature and underweight births, why AIDS and other immune deficiency syndromes seem to be related more to where you live than how you live. The answers lie in nuclear fallout patterns. In the fifty years since the commencement of the Nuclear Age, over 1.5 million American women have died of breast cancer; prior to 1945 the breast cancer incidence rate had been declining. The anomaly is also true for low birthweights and immune deficiency syndromes. [This book] looks closely at the true cost of nuclear fallout - costs we can no longer afford to pay - and it presents our only reasonable solution: to ban the operation of nuclear power stations, nuclear weapon manufacturing, and nuclear bomb testing.".

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1956. The June, 1956 issue of Fate Magazine (issue no. 75) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. A Near Fine copy - very near fine, with just touch edge wear on a small scale, light sunning at rear cover top and bottom (see scans), and of course some modest age-toning to the newsprint paper pages, which remain supple. High Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. See the scanned image of the contents page for the articles herein, which cover such topics as UFOS Over Japan; Parapsychology; Ghost on British Highways; Teleportation; Precognition; Appolonius of Tyana; Transformation; Time Travel; The Headless Horseman of Belmont; an Unruly Poltergeist; and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves, all on various other paranormal or inexplicable phenomena. Interior art and photography is largely uncredited. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. Please see scans. l50n.

This book chronicles the life of Marie Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte's second wife, from the moment of their separation in 1814 to his defeat at Waterloo. The author draws upon the journals and letters of Marie Louise and her contemporaries to provide insight into her character and motivations. Marie Louise's initial affection for Napoleon waned as she became aware of his infidelities and his disregard for her. Despite her initial reluctance to leave Napoleon, she was persuaded by her father, Emperor Francis of Austria, to return to Vienna. She struggled to reconcile her loyalties to her husband and her father, and ultimately chose to prioritize her family and her son, Napoleon II. The book explores the complex political and personal factors that influenced Marie Louise's decisions. The author argues that Marie Louise was a pawn in a larger power struggle between Napoleon and the European powers, and that she was ultimately sacrificed for the sake of political expediency. This thought-provoking work sheds new light on Marie Louise's life and the tumultuous period of history in which she lived. It is a valuable contribution to the study of the Napoleonic era and the role of women in history.
