Dezember 1766 geboren und fand über einige Umwege seine Berufung zur Ausbildung von Taubstummen wenige Jahre vor der Gründung einer eigenen Lehranstalt. Zuvor besuchte er die Universität in Wittenberg und studierte dort von 1782 bis 1785 Jura, Philosophie und Philologie. Besonders das Studium der Philosophie bei Elias Kaspar Reichard - hier vor allem die Bereiche Logik, empirische Psychologie und Ästhetik - legte den Grundstein für eigene vertiefende Studien . . . 1785 verließ Eschke Wittenberg und zog nach Leipzig, wo er an der Universität Jura, aber auch Geschichte, Geographie und Anthropologie hörte. In diesem Jahr begann Eschke auch mit der Arbeit an einer Pädagogik zur Ausbildung von Taubstummen. Im Rahmen seiner Arbeit hieran entstanden zahlreiche Studien auf dem Gebiet der Psychologie, weshalb er in einen Briefwechsel mit Karl Philipp Moritz und Karl Friedrich Pockels trat . . . Noch in Leipzig lernte er 1787 den ebenfalls auf dem Gebiet der Taubstummenbildung tätigen Samuel Heinike kennen, der ihn mit seiner Methode vertraut macht. Zu dieser Zeit hatte er bereits den Entschluß gefaßt, eine eigene Taubstummen-Anstalt zu gründen . . . Nach seiner Rückkehr tritt er in Verhandlungen mit dem preußischen Minister Karl Abraham Freiherr von Zedlitz, um ihn mit seiner Absicht vertraut zu machen. Im Jahre 1788 schließlich verlegt Eschke, mitlerweilen verheiratet mit der Tochter seines Lehrers Samuel Heinike, seinen Wohnsitz nach Berlin.
