L'auteur, qui paraît avoir subi certaines épreuves d'initiation dans les divers centres occultes, en dévoile les mystères dans des chapitres piquants qui complètent les différents travaux parus sur le même sujet » Dujols n° 124 « (Rare). A Lyon, où toutes les hérésies survivent », tel est le mot d'Huysmans épinglé en épigraphe à la première page de ce curieux livre qui, sous le voile de la fiction, révèle une masse de faits ignorés sur l'histoire contemporaine des mouvements occultistes les plus divers. Si, comme le montre cette étude, les représentants des grandes traditions ésotériques vivent encore à Lyon, ville célèbre dans les fastes maçonniques, il semblerait bien que le Vintrasisme y occupe une place prépondérante. Toutefois, un attrait particulier de cette oeuvre sera d'avoir attiré l'attention sur un des hommes les plus étranges de notre époque. Le Dr Joint-Dufont, dont il s'agit, n'est autre, en réalité, que le célèbre Dr François Point-Dumond, mire sans diplôme qui eut silhouette de Rose-Croix et fut vraiment un merveilleux thaumaturge. Nous pouvons d'autant mieux l'affirmer que nous connaissons des témoins de ses cures extraordinaires. Ce médecin avait la réputation d'un homme bizarre, et le livre de M. Esquirol appuie assez sur certains travers, mais il guérissait. Rien n'était plus stupéfiant, à notre époque positiviste, que ses consultations et ses méthodes thérapeutiques, notamment ses cures par le vinaigre, inspirées d'Annibal plutôt que d'Hippocrate. Au dire des simples, il faisait impression de sorcier. Sans doute, l'auteur de Cherchons l'Hérétique commet-il certaines irrévérences à l'égard des types qu'il met en scène, et peut-être l'étonnerait-on, en même temps que bien d'autres, en lui révélant que les doctrines qu'il parodie ont été l'objet d'une très favorable publicité dans les « Dossiers » rédigés pour les Stagiaires du Val d'Or, c'est- à-dire dans les Revues de l'Ecole initiatique de Paray-le-Monial. (cf. Félix de Rosnay. Le Hiéron du Val d'Or). Peut-être même le Dr Point-Dumond était-il un Mage de ce Hiéron rébarbatif institué pour répandre ces exégèses hardies d'une orthodoxie pour le moins déconcertante. Si l'on en croit la légende attachée à son nom, le thaumaturge lyonnais aurait été de race Juive et de la lignée d'Esdras. Son histoire, du reste, s'accorderait admirablement avec les chroniques occultes du Val d'Or. « L'an 610 avant notre ère, une colonie juive composée de l'élite des douze tribus, et pratiquant le préchristianisme dont, nous avons parlé plus haut, (cf. AUZOLES LAPEIRE. Melchisédec), abandonna la Palestine envahie par la corruption pour s'établir en Gaule, auprès des descendants des Druides, disciples d'Abraham. Le chef de la tribu royale de Juda choisit Lyon pour lieu de résidence, où son successeur encore vivant n'était autre que le personnage qui nous occupe. A l'avènement du nouveau culte, la Colonie Juive, les Druides et les Initiés de l'antique Christianisme d'Isis fusionnèrent avec les disciples de Jésus et formèrent une faction puissante dont les Francs tireraient leur origine. » Ces données sont-elles absolument fantaisistes ? Ce n'est point l'avis du Hiéron. Un prêtre qui a renom d'écrivain et d'orateur, M. Henri Bolo, semble bien s'être inspiré de quelque opinion du même genre, lorsqu'il prétend qu'au nombre des Saintes Femmes présentes à l'agonie du Christ, sur le Calvaire, se trouvaient des Gauloises. Faut-il ne voir là qu'une de ces bonnes galéjades de Marseillais bien nourri et d'une belle rondeur verbeuse ? Il serait excessif de le dire. Si, dans ce volume, M. Esquirol ne donne pas le mot de l'énigme, il met, dans tous les cas,
