II a. C.), un poema toxicológico en hexámetros donde el autor griego trataba los ataques de animales venenosos, sus efectos y los remedios válidos para su curación. La relevancia de Nicandro en el Renacimiento fue notable porque era considerado en los círculos de la Medicina humanista el principal representante de la toxicología antigua, y sus obras sobre venenos fueron frecuentemente utilizadas para comentar los libros de materia médica de Dioscórides, y sobre todo los escritos pseudo-dioscorideos sobre venenos. Una de estas traducciones latinas fue realizada en hexámetros por el profesor de Medicina, latinista y helenista Pedro Jaime Esteve, que la publicó en 1552 en Valencia, en las prensas del flamenco Juan Mey. Excepcional representante del humanismo médico español, con su versión de los Theriaca, la primera realizada en verso directamente desde el texto griego, entró de lleno en el selecto grupo de humanistas europeos que latinizaron al poeta de Colofón.
