Jahrhunderts, in den Jahrzehnten, die den Beginn der großen internationalen Ausstellungen markieren, strömte das Publikum zusammen, um einen Querschnitt dessen zu sehen, was in der westlichen (und gelegentlich östlichen) Kunst neu war. Ob 1855 und 1867 in Paris, 1862 in London, 1869 in München oder 1873 in Wien, der Besucher wurde mit einer Fülle von Kunstwerken konfrontiert, die ihm als das ästhetische Gegenstück zu den industriellen Erzeugnissen der zahlreich vertretenen Nationen präsentiert wurden. Bei einer so weitläufigen Schau war es möglich, nicht nur die Vitalität und den Geschmack der verschiedenen, in der Regel konkurrierenden Länder zu unterscheiden, sondern auch in einem internationalen Panorama die neuen Richtungen auszumachen, die die Kunst einschlug. Heute, über ein Jahrhundert später, erfüllen internationale Kunstausstellungen wie Zeitgeist ziemlich genau dieselbe Aufgabe. Die Zuschauer, die 1982 viele Grenzen überschreiten, um zum Martin-Gropius-Bau in Westberlin zu kommen, werden auch die Möglichkeit haben festzustellen, ob irgendein gemeinsamer Geist die Kunst vereint, die dort von beiden Seiten des Atlantiks, der Alpen, des Rheins und des Kanals versammelt sein wird, ebenso wie sie Gelegenheit haben werden zu beurteilen, ob etwa in den Beiträgen italienischer, deutscher, britischer oder amerikanischer Künstler tief eingefleischte nationale Traditionen entdeckt werden können. Den Geist jener ehrwürdigen Ausstellungen des 19. Jahrhunderts spürt man auch in den fieberhaften, bis zur letzten Minute dauernden Vorbereitungen, die es mit sich bringen, daß der Autor, der wie ich seine Kommentare lange vor der Eröffnung der Schau - statt kurz danach - zur Publikation vorbereiten muß, unvermeidlich im Dunkeln tappt und sie in Unkenntnis jener eben erst zur Vollendung gelangenden Werke schreibt, die im allerletzten Moment enthüllt werden. Zum Beispiel werden acht Künstler (Clémente, Cucchi, Fetting, McLean, Mid-dendorf, Paladino, Salle und Salomé) im weiträumigen zweigeschossigen Atrium gigantische Leinwände (3x4 Meter) ausbreiten, die eigens für diesen Raum und für diese Gelegenheit ausgeführt wurden. Auch solche Projekte erinnern uns an die heroischen Anstrengungen sowohl konservativer wie radikaler Künstler (eines Piloty oder eines Courbet) in der Mitte des 19.
