Bufford in Boston, frontispiece by J.P. Newell opposite title page vignette (TPV), minor damp-stain at upper edge (front end paper to title page), bi-fold map of "Rail routes to the city of Ottawa", including 13 tissue-guarded and tinted oval plates (7 by Newall, "View of the Locks" initialed WH (Winslow Homer), TPV and 5 unsigned attributed to WH), some foxing at end papers and tissue guards with clean strike plates and letter press, text toned. "Probably the first book to include lithographs drawn by Homer" (Tatham, p 22). Sabin 33937; Lande 1861. TPL 3563. Very good. Provenance: Inscribed to Commander William Brabazon Urmston R.N. (1828-1869), of the HMS Styx (1864-65), by Samuel Dawson (1833-1916), of Dawson Brothers, Montreal. Inscription reads "For Mrs. Urmston - Sent to Commander Urmston of HMS Styx - as a slight memento, of his visit to the fresh-water - seas of Canada, and of the respect for him and the - love for his profession entertained by all Montrealers. - Samuel E. Dawson - Montreal - Sept of 65".
