Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. First edition [of which 250 copies were printed]. 8vo. [xii], 655pp. Black buckram lettered and bordered in gold at the spine and with a gilt-stamped motif to the upper board. With a tissue protected photographic frontispiece, and twenty-four further plates of photographs, all with tissu…e-protectors present. A little bruising to the backstrip ends and to several corner tips. A touch of wear to the upper gutter, and the lower gutter split but holding. Some browning to the half-title, and to a single concluding leaf. A single inked correction in the text. This copy from the Carrington family library, with the remnants of a plate bearing their coat of arms pasted to the upper board. A good copy of this journal detailing the young lives of the two Grenfell brothers killed in the First World War ("The following pages have been compiled by my wife [Lady Ethel Desborough] from the Journal which she kept for our children from their earliest years. The book is privately printed, and is intended for Julian and Billy's brother and sisters, and for their most intimate friends" - preface). Includes the transcripts of various letters from the two siblings, followed by scores and scores of tributes and letters of condolences (offered by Maurice Baring, Hilaire Belloc, Winston Churchill, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling &c). War poet Julian Grenfell and his younger Gerald William 'Billy' Grenfell were both killed in action in May and July 1915 respectively, within a mile of each other. Their mother Lady (Ethel) "Ettie" Desborough was haunted by bereavement for the rest of her life. Most uncommon.
