Dort lernte er bei Nicolas Poussin und schulte er sich an antiken Skulpturen und den Werken von Lodovico Carracci, Raffael und Guido Reni. 1646 nach Frankreich zurückgekehrt, erhielt er verschiedenste Aufträge. Im Jahr 1648 war Le Brun Mitbegründer der Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. Ab 1657 wurde er von Nicolas Fouquet protegiert und stand dessen Tapisserie-Manufaktur in Maincy vor. Im Folgejahr begann Le Brun mit der Ausschmückung des Schlosses Vaux-le-Vicomte. Darüber kam er in Kontakt mit Louis Le Vau und André Le Nôtre. 1660 führte ihn Jules Mazarin bei Hofe ein. Er begann einen Gemälde zyklus zur Historie von Alexander dem Grossen für den König. Nach dem Sturz Fouquets wechselte er in den Dienst der Krone. Einen neuen Gönner fand Le Brun in Jean-Baptiste Colbert. 1662 wurde er geadelt und zum Premier Peintre du Roi ernannt. 1663 stand er der königlichen Sammlung vor und wurde Direktor der Manufacture Royale des Tapisseries et Meubles de la Couronne. 1666 begründete er eine Aussenstelle der Akademie Roms. Französischer Historien- und Bühnenbildmaler, Architekt und Ornamentzeichner. Schüler seines Vaters Nicolas Le Brun. 1632 studierte Le Brun Malerei bei François Perrier und 1634-1637 bei Simon Vouet. Bereits im Jahre 1638 war er Peintre du Roi. 1642 bekam Le Brun die Möglichkeit zum Studium nach Italien zu gehen. Dort lernte er bei Nicolas Poussin und schulte er sich an antiken Skulpturen und den Werken von Lodovico Carracci, Raffael und Guido Reni. 1646 nach Frankreich zurückgekehrt, erhielt er verschiedenste Aufträge. Im Jahr 1648 war Le Brun Mitbegründer der Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. Ab 1657 wurde er von Nicolas Fouquet protegiert und stand dessen Tapisserie-Manufaktur in Maincy vor. Im Folgejahr begann Le Brun mit der Ausschmückung des Schlosses Vaux-le-Vicomte. Darüber kam er in Kontakt mit Louis Le Vau und André Le Nôtre. 1660 führte ihn Jules Mazarin bei Hofe ein. Er begann einen Gemälde zyklus zur Historie von Alexander dem Grossen für den König. Nach dem Sturz Fouquets wechselte er in den Dienst der Krone. Einen neuen Gönner fand Le Brun in Jean-Baptiste Colbert. 1662 wurde er geadelt und zum Premier Peintre du Roi ernannt. 1663 stand er der königlichen Sammlung vor und wurde Direktor der Manufacture Royale des Tapisseries et Meubles de la Couronne. 1666 begründete er eine Aussenstelle der Akademie Roms. Zwei Jahre später wurde er deren Leiter. Nach dem Tode Colberts im Jahre 1683 wandte sich der König zunehmend von ihm ab. Le Brun prägte mit seinem breiten Schaffen maßgeblich den Stil Ludwigs XIV. Bildete sich nach italienischen Meistern. 1645-48 Zyklus von 22 Gemälden aus dem Leben des heiligen Bruno im Kleinen Kartäuserkloster in Paris (heute Musee du Louvre). 1649 Predigt des Apostels Paulus in Ephesos für Notre Dame in Paris (ebenfalls Musee du Louvre). The album contains 114 portrait engravings printed on strong laid paper wi…thout a watermark. Portrait size ca. 125 x 91 mm. The portraits are numbered in roman numbers ( I - CXIV) in the centre at the top and have a name caption in the centre at the bottom. All engravings are signed at bottem left in the plate ; Plates 11 , 13 , 43 , 45 , 46 , 57 , 58 , 77 , 94 , 97 , and 102 ( in all 11 plates) are signed '' Ioseph Testana sculps.'' ; 53 plates signed ''E. Picart sculps. '' and 50 plates signed Vallée. (Plates 28 is signed Vallée but this name seems to be added at a later stage). According to Cicognara (note at item 2792) this album was published in Rome in 1669 with an allegorical frontispiece and some annotations by the compiler's brother Antonio (this frontispiece and the annotations are lacking here). This original edition comprised 114 plates ( as our album). The original project of Giovanni Canini comprised only 60 portraits, 54 were added by his brother.

The print was probably sketched (and published?) in the period Étienne Picart was in Rome, 1655-1665.Signed on bottom right: 'Steph. Picart R.us fecit et ex. Cum Pri. Regis'. Incomplete impression, lettering at the bottom removed. Still, beautiful impression, masterly engraved.On bottom of the right corner, some pencil scribblings not affecting the plate. Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark, total: 421 x 323 mm; some foxing on the most external margins; watermark with monogram of Christ; traces of previous mountings on verso. Light horizontal fold in the middle.
