Kl.-4°. 1 Bl., 38 SS. Br. mit Rückenfalz. Michael Ernst Ettmüller (Leipzig 1673 - 1732) begann 1692 ein Studium an der Universität Wittenberg. Den Hochschulgepflogenheiten der damaligen Zeit folgend, absolvierte er zunächst ein philosophisches Grundstudium. Bald wechselte er wieder in seine Heimatstadt und erwarb dort den akademischen Grad eines Magisters der Philosophie. In der Folge verlegte er sich auf die medizinischen Wissenschaften. 1697 unternahm er eine zweijährige Bildungsreise, die ihn durch Deutschland, England und Holland führte. Zurückgekehrt nach Leipzig, promovierte er 1699 zum Doktor der Medizin. Der Leipziger Rat bestellte ihn daraufhin zum Arzt am dortigen Lazarett. 1702 wurde er zum außerordentlichen Professor der Medizin an der Leipziger Hochschule ernannt. Am 11. Oktober 1702 wurde er mit dem akademischen Beinamen "Alexius" zum Mitglied der Leopoldina gewählt. 1706 wurde er ordentlicher Professor der Anatomie und Chirurgie, 1719 Professor der Physiologie und 1724 Professor der Pathologie.- Papier gebräunt.

This original dissertation for a medical degree on the subject of pancreatic tumours is by Michael Ernst Ettmuller (1673-1732), the son of the great Leipzig physician of the same name. Michael Sr. (1644-1683) was an extraordinary professor of surgery and anatomy who enjoyed a great reputation as a lecturer and wrote many tracts on medical and chemical subjects. Michael Jr, succeeded his father as professor of medicine (1702), anatomy and surgery (1706), physiology (1719) and pathology (1724) at Leipzig. He published his father's collected works in 1708.

Leipzig 1701/1743. Kupferstich. Plattengröße: 189 × 140 mm. Johann Georg Mentzel sc.; kleine Randläsuren am unteren Rand; alt montiert. ohann Georg Mentzel (tätig Anfang 18. Jh.), Kupferstecher in Leipzig, ist vor allem durch Porträt- und Ansichtenstiche bekannt. Als gelehrtenbildnerisches Porträtblatt für medizinhistorische Sammelwerke oder als Frontispiz zu einem medizinischen Text konzipiert; betont die Verbindung des Leipziger Professors Ettmüller mit dem englischen Kliniker Sydenham. Die beiden Halbfiguren erscheinen in ovalen Rahmen vor einem schweren Vorhang, der nach oben gerafft ist; darunter eine architektonische Brüstung mit beschrifteten Kartuschen, die die Identifikation der Dargestellten sichern. Der nüchterne, an niederländisch-deutschen Barockstichen orientierte Stil mit feiner Schraffur unterstreicht den gelehrten Charakter des Blattes. Mentzel arbeitet mit dicht gesetzten Linien zur Modellierung der Gewänder und zum Aufbau eines ruhigen, repräsentativen Bühnenraums. Michael Ernst Ettmüller (1673 Leipzig - 1732 Leipzig) war deutscher Arzt, Anatom und Professor der Medizin in Leipzig und Wittenberg; er entstammte einer bekannten Leipziger Ärzte- und Professorenfamilie. Er lehrte Physiologie und praktische Medizin, verfasste Lehrbücher und hielt Disputationen, die in ganz Europa verbreitet wurden. Thomas Sydenham (1624 Wynford Eagle - 1689 London) war englischer Arzt und wurde wegen seiner klinisch-empirischen Krankheitsbeobachtungen oft als "englischer Hippokrates" bezeichnet. Seine Beschreibungen akuter Krankheiten und seine Betonung der Beobachtung am Krankenbett prägten die praktische Medizin des 17. Jahrhunderts nachhaltig. Das Blatt macht die Verbindung zweier bedeutender Kliniker sichtbar und belegt die hohe Wertschätzung Sydenhams im deutschsprachigen Raum des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts. In medizinhistorischen Sammlungen dient das Doppelporträt als wichtiges ikonographisches Zeugnis für die Vernetzung der europäischen Gelehrtenmedizin.
