Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Author / Editor: Edited by Eugene Pellissier, M.A., B.Sc., LL.B. (Fellow of the French University; Formerly Assistant Master at Clifton College) Publication Date: [circa 1910s-1930s; Twenty-first Edition] Format / Binding: Publisher's original brown cloth hardcover with black lettering and decorative rules to front cover and spine. Plain endpapers. Pagination: iv + 112 pp. (complete, including half-title, title page, preface, contents, text, and terminal advertisement leaf) Condition: Good+ / Very Good for a school textbook of this vintage. Externally: The brown cloth boards remain bright and attractive with only light, even rubbing to the extremities and a few faint handling marks. Black titling and rules are sharp and fully legible. Corners are lightly bumped but not frayed or split. Spine is square, firm, and uncracked with no fading or splitting at the hinges. Internally: Binding is tight and secure throughout with no loose or detached pages. Endpapers show very light toning. Text block edges are clean with only the slightest age-toning to the paper, which is typical of early-20th-century British schoolbooks. Occasional faint foxing spots appear on a handful of pages (mainly prelims and margins), but the vast majority of text pages are clean, bright, and completely unmarked. No underlining, annotations, school stamps, or library markings. All French text remains fully legible. Overall a very solid, well-preserved example that displays nicely on the shelf and would be ideal for collectors or re-use in a classroom setting. Book Description / Notes: A scarce and attractive Twenty-first Edition of this classic British educational "unseens" reader compiled specifically for Middle Forms (roughly equivalent to modern Key Stage 3 / early secondary French). The volume contains 100+ graduated passages in prose and verse, selected mostly from past examination papers, designed to build sight-translation skills. Authors represented include La Fontaine, Victor Hugo, Balzac, Alexandre Dumas, Chateaubriand, Alfred de Musset, George Sand, Jules Verne, Anatole France, and many others. Full contents table (viii pages) lists every extract with author and page number. Features the original Preface by E. Pellissier (signed "E. P."), which discusses the value of unseen translation practice and the careful selection criteria used to ensure literary quality and vocabulary building. Also includes the full Blackie & Son publisher's advertisement page at the front listing companion French titles with original prices. Colophon at the end reads: "Printed in Great Britain by Blackie & Son, Ltd., Glasgow". Publisher's addresses listed on the verso of the title page and advertisement leaf: 50 Old Bailey, London; 17 Stanhope Street, Glasgow; plus Blackie & Son (India) Limited in Bombay and Blackie & Son (Canada) Limited in Toronto. An excellent example of early-20th-century British schoolbook publishing and a fascinating window into historical French-language pedagogy in UK secondary education.…
