About the book >.>.> A long tradition exists in avian population studies of monitoring changes in numbers or densities of birds, with rather little attention being paid to the size, biomass or quality of the individuals involved. Instead. interest has been focussed upon the maximum number of birds using a location, often spoken of as its 'carrying capacity. This approach also finds its way into many arguments concerning the protection or manage ment of habitats for birds: an area is considered good if it supports large numbers of birds at some time of year, poor if it does not. It is a major theme of this book that such attitudes are inappropriate when consider-ing wintering shorebird and wildfowl populations. In particular we shall avoid the use of the term 'carrying capacity, in spite of its current popularity amongst ornithologists when discussing the numbers of birds found on estuaries. Although the term currently has many meanings. none is of particular value in the investigations of the problems discussed here. Thus theoretical po.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This 1984 book arose from an international meeting held at Texel in the Netherlands in April 1981 to discuss the feeding requirements and behaviour of shorebirds and coastal wildfowl. The book was designed both for general ornithologists, so that they may advise planners concerned with coastal wetlands, and for research workers interested in bird ecology and behaviour. The book is divided into three sections, each the responsibility of one of the editors, who provides a brief section introduction. The first covers bird numbers in relation to food resources; the second relates population densities to social and individual behaviour of birds within the flocks, and the third examines the role of areas of particular significance to migrant shorebirds along the route from West Africa to the high-latitude breeding grounds stretching from Greenland to western Siberia. This volume was produced in conjunction with the British Ornithologists' Union.
