Edited by Martin Everaert, Simon Musgrave, and Alexis Dimitriadis. This book promotes the development of linguistic databases by describing a number of successful database projects, focusing especially on cross-linguistic and typological research. Such a systematic body of data is essential in order to gain a proper understanding of what is truly universal in language and what is determined by specific cultural settings. Moreover, it is increasingly needed as a tool to systematically evaluate contrasting theoretical claims. The book includes a chapter on general problems of using databases to handle language data and chapters on a number of individual projects. 409 Seiten, gebunden (Empirical Approaches to Language Typology; Vol. 41/Mouton de Gruyter Verlag 2009) leichte Lagerspuren. orig.boards Minor rubbing. VG., dustwrapper. 24x15cm, ix,372 pp., Series: Oxford Studies in Theoretical Linguistics, 5. "The phenomenon of unaccusativity is a central focus for the study of the complex properties of verb classes. The Unaccusative Hypothesis, first formulated in 1978, claimed that there are two classes of intransitive verbs, the unaccusative (Jill arrived) and the unergative or agentive ( Jill sings). The hypothesis has provided a rich context for debating whether syntactic behaviour is semantically or lexically determined, the consequence of syntactic context, or a combination of these factors. No consensus has been reached. This book combines contemporary approaches to the subject with several papers that have achieved a significant status even though formally unpublished" - Publisher's description. Minor rubbing. [Leiden, Jan Claesz van Dorp, 1597 & Heidelberg, Commelin, 1602]. 4to. (Collation: 4A-6O4). Contemporary parchment. (binding soiled and dam.; front hinge splitting; paper( a bit) browned and water stained; back board almost loose from book block) - Missing: general title, introduction etc, and the ephemerides for the years 1590 to 1598 and 1614 to 1615. See Hoogendoorn, Evera02 and Bibliotheca Belgica E 44 and E 45. Part of a larger work: The edition 1597 starts with the Ephemerides for the year 1590 and ends with the year 1610. (see also TB 1853 & Bierens de Haan 1369) This was supplemented in the Commelin-edition 1602 by the Ephemerides for the years 1611 to 1615: "Une partie de cette édition est de l'impression de Leiden, 1597. Les ff.lim.seuls ont été réimprimés, la liste des 'errata' a été omise, et les éphémérides pour les années 1611-1615 ont été ajoutées." According to Hoogendoorn the supplement was printed in Franeker by Gillis van den Rade. VERY RARE EPHEMERIDES by the Dutch physician and astronomer Marten Everaert (1599-1613), probably published in parts. MOST INTERESTING COPY with many contemporary annotations and corrections by a scholar. These annotations refer to natural events (floods earthquakes, severe frost etc.), the war (a.o. Siege of Den Bosch; the conquest and pillage of Budapest), and many references to astronomy: Kepler, Longomontanus, Al-Qabisi, comets. Although the annotations refer a.o. to Copenhague, Bohemia, Bavaria, are mostly written in Latin with some French at the end, and are clearly written by a person well versed in astronomy, we have failed to identify him. NO COPY OF THE CONTINUATION (1611-1613) IN ANY DUTCH LIBRARY.

C2 remargined at the upper spine-corner, with one letter restored in facsimile. Washed. Ink signature and date at the lower edge of the title-page. Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer (1533-1606), one of the brightest lights of Dutch Golden-Age mapmaking, distinguished himself from many of his fellow stars by some 14 years of seafaring, rather than simply compiling the exploration and observation of others. The Spieghel der Zeevaerdt (although in the present issue the title-page reads Spiegel; the Seafarer's Mirror or, as it was originally Englished, the Mariner's Mirrour) is properly a rutter (seafarer's handbook) with charts, and it is the first. It distinguished by its usefulness , integrating for the first time charts, ships' logs and rutters (handbooks of voyages). As a result, the popularity of the work was extraordinary. It was translated into Latin (first) as well as German, French and English. Indeed, despite the longstanding antipathy between the Low Countries and England, sea-atlases were long called "wagoners" after Waghenaer, the kleenex of maritime cartography. This Latin edition (Wag 5A) publishes for the first time chart 42 (part 2, quire XIX, part of the Danish coast). Koeman calls the plates, engraved by Baptist and Johannes van Deutecom, "the most beautiful maps of the period." Marvyn Carton (1917-2004) was an investment banker and trustee of Brown University. He endowed the Kapstein chair in literary arts at Brown. His substantial collection of maps and atlases was sold by Christie's New York in 2006. I cannot decipher the manuscript of the title-page. Koeman IV:Wag 5A, Phillips 3980, Scheepvaert Museum p. 44.
