A remarkable collaborative work bringing together two of the twentieth century's leading thinkers on the foundations of knowledge--the logician and philosopher of mathematics E. W. Beth, and the developmental psychologist Jean Piaget--to address a question that had divided them: what is the relationship between formal logic and ordinary human thought? The book is structured in two complementary parts. Beth's contribution takes a historico-critical approach, surveying the philosophy of mathematical reasoning from Aristotle and Descartes through Kant, Leibniz, and the great modern logicians--Frege, Russell, Hilbert, Brouwer, and others--examining how mathematical demonstration works and what role intuition plays alongside formal proof. Piaget's part approaches the same questions psycho-genetically, drawing on his empirical studies of child development to show how logical and mathematical structures emerge from concrete action and sensory-motor activity, gradually becoming internalised as abstract operations of thought. Piaget), ed un grande logico, ricco di cultura filosofica ed umanistica (E. W. Beth), a seguito di un'iniziale ed aspra polemica tra loro intercorsa nel 1949 e 1950, decidono successivamente di affrontare insieme un tema insidioso, quale quello del rapporto tra l'epistemologia della matematica e la psicologia genetica. La loro cooperazione produce il presente lavoro, di grande spessore epistemologico, che dopo quasi sessant'anni dalla sua pubblicazione, si rivela ancora di grande attualità. Soprattutto perché getta le basi per un approccio costruttivo ala conoscenza, collocandola in un ambito transculturale, ricco di suggerimenti ed indicazioni innovative, volte al superamento delle vecchie e stantie, vale a dire ideologiche, rigide strutturazioni della conoscenza. Insieme a "Logica e conoscenza scientifica" e "Biologia e conoscenza", entrambi successivi (1967), è il testo che, nell'insieme delle opere piagetiàne, assolve più di altri a questo compito. Libro.
