Oswald Petersen (1903 - 1992) was a German painter who was part of the Düsseldorf painting school. From 1927 to 1933 he lived in Paris , where he studied at the Acadà mie Lhote, founded by Andrà Lhote in 1922 in the Rue d'Odessa on Montparnasse . The cubist painter, sculptor and art theorist's students included Tamara de Lempicka , Henri Cartier-Bresson , Alf Bayrle , Hans Hartung , Anna Eva Bergman , Aurà lie Nemours , Fred Klein and William Klein. In 1932, the French poet and surrealist Robert Valençay described Oswald Petersen as âextremely sensitive in playing with colorsâ in the âRevue d'Allemagne et des pays de langue allemandeâ. This sensitivity is "more a matter of temperament than school". In addition, he developed his emotions "to a conscious constructive ability" and thus disciplined them. He called him a main representative of current young painting in Germany. The French poet and art critic Andrà Salmon , an advocate and pioneer of Cubism, attested him "a rare intelligence in visual design". 1937 he exhibited his landscapes in the Düsseldorf Reich Exhibition Schaffendes Volk , an externally important propaganda show in Germany during National Socialism. From 1945 the art dealer Hella Nebelung exhibited its works in the ruin of a patrician house bombed by the war at Düsseldorf HofgartenstraÃe 10 and from 1955 in the southern Ratinger Tor . In 1946 Oswald Petersen joined the Rhenish Secession , in 1949 the New Rhenish Secession and in 1950 the German Association of Artists , in whose first annual exhibitions he participated until 1954. His works have their own character between abstract and classical forms and occupy an important position, especially in painting after 1945. Supported by the gallery owner Hella Nebelung, he had exhibitions in 1957, 1968 ( watercolors ) and 1977 ( portraits ) in the municipal art collection in Düsseldorf, in 1960 at the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen and in 1967 in Oldenburg (Oldenburg). From the 1960s on, Petersen devoted himself to watercolor painting, in addition to portraiture. This is how light-flooded watercolors with informal color flows from gorges on Ischia and in Spain were created. The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf showed them from November 29, 1968 to January 1, 1969 in the solo exhibition "Oswald Petersen - New Aquarelle". Since the 1980s, near Bad Gastein, large-format âforestâ watercolors and âforest clearingsâ painted in oil with an abstract effect have been created. …

In 1937 he was a member of the artistical movement Corrente di Vita. In the same year he was arrested by the Fascist government for opposing the regime. He subsequently cast painting aside to devote himself to support Communist causes and, later, the partisan resistance.After World War II, in 1947, Birolli moved to Paris. Here his painting style changed under the influence of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, moving first to a post-Cubist position and then to a somehow abstract form of lyrism.He died suddenly in Milan in 1959.…
