Presumed first edition (no direct statement provided but with Eerdmans' single-line printing statement upon copyright page) INSCRIBED, DATED, AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. 188 pages. Hardcover: H 20cm x L 14cm. Dust jacket with color pictorial front panel and spine; foxing/toning to white rear panel; some chipping at edges and along… flap folds; front flap retains publisher's printed price at top right. Reddish-brown boards; blue lettering to spine and front board. A few small stains to text block's top edge; mild foxing to bottom edge with faint foxing to fore-edge. Author's warm nine-line ink inscription: "To - | Rev. R.A. Bolling | My friend - A faithful | servant of the Lord - One | who has rendered much to | humanity - With kindest | regards- | A Roy Beasley | September 19, 1952" upon the front free endpaper; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good+ copy in a very good- dust jacket. Summarized upon the front flap as: "the haunting personal account of a Methodist minister who served large city churches for thirty years and then chose to become chaplain to the human wrecks of the notoriously famous Parchman Prison, Mississippi's State Penitentiary. It is also the story of the constricting spiritual oppression that is the real retribution of the prisoner who cannot escape the hot tortures of his twisted mind, bent on absolving itself of any real guilt." The book's inscribee is Reverend Richard Asa Bolling (1890-1971) who served as pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Mississippi from 1926 to 1962.
