Leo the Deacon was one of the most important Byzantine authors of the second half of the 10th century. In the ten books of his History, he described contemporary events in the internal and, especially, foreign affairs of the empire. His narrative covers primarily the years 959-976, although in several excursuses he recounts facts dating back to later times (up to 992). Leo the Deacon, a highly knowledgeable author close to court circles, is a valuable and interesting source not only for the history of the Byzantine Empire but also of Bulgaria and Ancient Rus': the Balkan wars of the Kievan Prince Svyatoslav from 968-971 constitute one of the main themes of his work.
