Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. "The Life and Work Griffith Jones of Llanddowror" offers a thorough biographical study of one of the most influential figures in the history of Wales. Griffith Jones, an 18th-century clergyman, is celebrated as the founder of the Circulating Schools, a pioneering educational system designed… to bring literacy and religious instruction to the Welsh people in their own language. This work examines the life of Jones from his early years to his influential tenure as the rector of Llanddowror, highlighting his unwavering commitment to social and spiritual reform. The narrative explores the operational genius of the circulating schools, which moved from parish to parish to accommodate the needs of rural laborers. By focusing on his theological motivations and his administrative challenges, the text illustrates how Jones laid the groundwork for a literate and culturally conscious Wales. The book also contextualizes his role within the broader religious movements of the time, including his relationship with the early Methodists. This volume serves as a vital record for readers interested in the evolution of educational practices, the preservation of the Welsh language, and the history of the Anglican Church in Wales. F.A. Cavenagh's account remains a definitive look at a man whose vision transformed the intellectual and moral landscape of his country. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Cream coloured cloth bound, hardback book, with gilt titles on the spine. Comes with nice dust jacket, a tad worn around the back, please see photos, not price clipped. This lovely, well written book is in good condition, normal wear, marks and tear a…pply consistent with use and age. First edition published 1965 in the UK. 207 pages, all intact and nice tight binding. All pages, text and illustrations are in good, clean, readable order. This is a splendid account of a medical officer in Cyprus and Suez. In a rash moment, Sandy Cavenagh a recently qualified doctor, volunteered for parachute training; after the usual hair-raising training course, rendered the more horrific by the fact that he was rushed through in half the time allotted to the ordinary trainee, he found himself in Cypress and on active service with 3 PARA against General Grivas and the Eoka terrorists. His description of the Cyprus Emergency is both exciting and interesting, whether he was patching up the military victims of terrorist ambushes of delivering Cypriot babies in remote mountain villages. The book is an enthralling personal adventure story, but is also a fine study of parachute soldiers at war. Dr. Cavenagh has a shrewd, observant eye, and he also held a unique position in the battalion; he has not missed his opportunities in this most readable book.
