Il me semble que, dans certains cas, elles ne sont pas si différentes, et que c'est le même double ressort fondamental qui aiguillonna les uns et les autres : plaisir égoïste et solitaire de manier en connaisseur, dans l'intimité de sa bibliothèque, de beaux livres, de goûter la qualité de leur calligraphie ou de leur typographie, de se laisser enchanter par leur illustration, de sentir sous le doigt la finesse du parchemin ou le velouté d'un papier rare, de caresser les reliures et d'en admirer le décor raffiné ; mais, tout autant, plaisir social, émulation dans la recherche des belles pièces, rivalité dans le luxe de la présentation matérielle, joie de l'ostentation, désir, parfois, de laisser un souvenir à fa postérité. Voici comment sont décrits deux manuscrits présentés dans l'exposition : - Un grant bréviaire entier, très noblement escripl et très noblement enluminé et ystorié -, c'est en ces termes laudatifs et combien mérités qu'est évoqué dans l'inventaire des livres de Charles V conservés à Vincennes le bréviaire exposé sous le n° 5. Les rédacteurs des inventaires de Jean de Berry- vont plus loin : ils nous fournissent occasionnellement le nom des artistes de renom auxquels le frère de Charles V confia la décoration de ses plus beaux manuscrits. - Un Psautier escript en latin et français, très richement enluminé, où il apluseurs histoires au commencement de la main maistre André Beauneueu - c'est grâce à cette mention que nous savons que le duc eut la singulière idée de faire illustrer son psautier (n° 6) non par un enlumineur mais par- le plus grand sculpteur du temps." From the introduction: "In 1985, two years after it began collecting medieval illuminated manuscripts, the J. Paul Getty Museum acquired a section of the Hours of Simon de Varie. Produced in F…rance shortly after the middle of the fifteenth century and illustrated by three artistically very different painters - among them Jean Fouquet, one of the most accomplished and inventive artists ever to practice the craft of manuscript illumination - the codex had been dismembered in the seventeenth century and suffered post-medieval alterations that disguised many of its original features. Two disparate sections had been acquired in the nineteenth century by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague. The long-lost volume purchased by the Getty Museum represented the missing third section. With its discovery, we were able to reconstruct, for the first time, much of the manuscript's history and some of the circumstances of its production, as well as appreciate its original extent and form."
