Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. 1935. Hardcover. Stated Third Printing. Book is inscribed with best wishes from Henry J. Allen who was the 21st Governor of Kansas (1919-1923) and a Republican Senator from Kansas in 1929-30. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Con…dition: VG+; Sunfading to spine; light soiling to front board. No DJ. Red cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on spine and front board. 212 pp 8vo. After losing the presidential election in 1932 to Franklin Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover went into exile in the political wilderness, far from the public eye. From this vantage, Hoover watched the development of the New Deal. Hoover saw the New Deal's disregard for a balanced budget, abandoning of the gold standard, and increasingly powerful federal bureaucracy as serious threats to America's heritage of liberty. Hoover made a series of speeches attacking the New Deal, explaining the threat to American individualism that it presented. In 1934 he wrote the book, The Challenge to Liberty, to present his reaction to the New Deal. A clean presentable copy with a rare signature from Henry J. Allen, who was a political supporter and cohort of Hoover's. Signed by others involved with.

Internally clean. Includes multiple pages of printed notes from a previous owner, identifying signatures from this work. This visitor log is signed by near…ly 150 dignitaries who traveled through RAF Bovingdon, including the following: President Herbert Hoover, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Averell Harriman, Gen. Lucius Clay, King Peter of Yugoslavia, Actress Mary Pickford, Sir Arthur "Bomber" Harris, Brig. Gen. Charles Y. Banfill, Chinese diplomat Wellington Koo, Secretary of State James F. RAF Bovingdon was located in Hertfordshire, England, operational from 1942 to 1972. It was built during World War II and served as the home base for the USAAF's Eighth Air Force, notably hosting B-17 Flying Fortress units. General Eisenhower's personal B-17 was housed at the base during the war. The airfield also became a location for film productions in the 1960s before its eventual closure in 1972. Provenance: Luis Porretta Fine Arts, Nanaimo, B.C., 2003. Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. HOOVER, Herbert. 4 items, two from the WHITE HOUSE library, one from H.L. Mencken. (1) Address of Mr. Herbert Hoover, Republican Nominee for President. Delivered at Newark, N.J. September 17, 1928. 9"x6". 15 sheets, printed on one side only, staple-bound at upper left. *This in my opinion are p…roof sheets for the full publication, with text on both sides and side-stapled. (2) "Inaugural Address of Herbert Hoover, President of the United States. Delivered at the National Capitol, Washington D.C., March 4, 1929. 9"x 6". 11pp. Original wrappers, side-stapled. From the WHITE HOUSE Library, transferred from there on 6 July 1934, early in the first term of FDR. I don't know if everything from Hoover's WH library was sent away, or just, um, selected bits. But it is certainly interesting and a little poetic about the FDR White House getting rid of this (and the following) item, given the extended snub given FDR by HH, and then the subsequent silence of the Sphinx from Hyde Park, who refused HH's memorandum of suggestions on curing the Depression. (3) "Inaugural Address of Herbert Hoover, President of the United States. Delivered at the National Capitol, Washington D.C., March 4, 1929." 11 sheets, printed on one side only. Original wrappers. This is an ADVANCED PRINTING of the speech, and is stamped "CONFIDENTIAL" with a warning on the use of the content, banned until the speech was actually given. Partially disbound, with numerous chips. GOOD copy, only. This is from the WHITE HOUSE LIBRARY, transferred 9 July 1934. Provenance: White House Library to the Library of Congress. All three have the small (10mm) "LC" perforated stamp on front wrapper and the LC rubber stamp on rear wrapper. (4) "Address of Acceptance of the Republican Nomination for President", delivered at Stanford University, August 11, 1928. 13pp, printed on one side only. ADVANCED reading copy, stamped "Confidential". Also this was the copy of HL Mencken, with about 10 penciled underlinings. This was sent to the Library of Congress in 1929. Original wrappers. VG copy.
