Quarter brown speckled calf binding with marbled paper boards. Spine backstrip missing. Scuffing to binding but reasonably clean. Rubbing at edges and on hinges, some discolouration to leather. Chipping to paper edges of boards, bumped and torn corners. Cracking to hinges, boards attached but only partially, very strained. Textblock firm. Red speckled page edges which are browned, a little scuffed and otherwise marked but reasonably clean. Some marking around edges of endpapers and pastedowns. Slight toning to margins but otherwise pages very clean, no underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information. The Gentleman's Magazine was a monthly magazine founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1907, ceasing publication altogether in 1922. It was the first to use the term magazine (from the French magazine, meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Samuel Johnson's first regular employment as a writer was with The Gentleman's Magazine.
