Caterina, cioè dell'istituto cattolico di formazione ed educazione più importante di Pisa. L'arco di tempo considerato va dalla fondazione nel 1784 all'episcopato del cardinale Pietro Maffi, che tenne il governo di Pisa dal 1903 al 1931 e risulta la figura più illustre tra i vescovi pisani dell'età contemporanea. Nel secolo e mezzo di vita preso in esame l'istituto accoglieva il seminario, un collegio e alunni esterni che frequentavano le sue scuole. La storia dell'istituto s'intreccia con la storia politica della Toscana: dal periodo di Pietro Leopoldo alla dominazione francese, al ritorno dei Lorena fino al passaggio della Toscana allo Stato italiano. Le vicende interne risentono, oltre che della situazione politica, del clima religioso caratteristico dei vari periodi: dagli effetti in seno alla Chiesa delle riforme leopoldine, alla contrastata esperienza di Chiesa gallicana durante l'Impero napoleonico; dalla situazione della Chiesa nel periodo della Restaurazione e della breve primavera di riforme, animate dall'ideale neoguelfo, ai duri anni dell'intransigenza, fino al lento e problematico riavvicinamento della Chiesa all'Italia nel segno dell'armonia di religione e patria durante l'episcopato di Maffi. In sostanza la storia del seminario e collegio di S. Caterina offre uno spaccato della Chiesa pisana dalla fine del 1700 agli anni trenta del Novecento.

Caterina" è il proseguimento del volume pubblicato nel 2015 che delineava la storia dell'istituto dalla fondazione all'episcopato del cardinale Pietro Maffi. Il periodo storico esaminato ha inizio dalla morte dell'illustre arcivescovo avvenuta nel 1931 e giunge fino all'apertura del Concilio Vaticano II nel 1962. In modo più marcato, rispetto al volume precedente, la storia dell'istituto è inserita nella storia della Chiesa pisana. Nel periodo preso in esame la Chiesa di Pisa si misurò con il regime fascista in fasi e con risultati alterni, fu vicina al popolo nel periodo della seconda guerra mondiale, partecipò alla ricostruzione postbellica: visse in modo intenso le vicende politiche e religiose della seconda metà degli anni Quaranta, degli anni Cinquanta e dei primi anni Sessanta. In questo trentennio l'istituto di "S. Caterina", nelle sue tre componenti, seminario, collegio ed esternato, respirò il clima dell'epoca: in particolare visse in modo drammatico le vicende belliche fino ad essere costretto ad abbandonare la sede pisana per rifugiarsi nella certosa di Calci. Dalla seconda metà degli anni Quaranta fino agli anni Sessanta ebbe un progressivo sviluppo sotto la direzione di mons. Mario Estivi: vide la costruzione di un'ala nuova che accolse il pensionato universitario "G. Toniolo", ebbe il riconoscimento legale delle sue scuole, accolse un consistente aumento di alunni e si caratterizzò per un notevole progresso quantitativo e qualitativo in campo spirituale e culturale. Si qualificò, insomma, come centro della vita diocesana, esercitando un ruolo importante anche nelle vicende della città di Pisa. Libro.
