Engraved map on two sheets, joined. 480 x 750 mm. An extraordinary example of "the first modern map of the Arabian peninsula" (Al-Ankary),here in an extremely rare state unrecorded by Bifolco and Ronca: a variation of the equally rare second state as produced by Paolo Graziani, which does not include Pietro de' Nobili's signature. After Gastaldi's small map of 1548, this large wall map on two joint sheets is regarded as the first "modern" map of Arabia and served as a model for all further mapping of the peninsula until the 19th century. It remains the most sought-after map of the region. - Gastaldi is regarded as "the most important 16th century Italian cartographer. His maps are very rare, as they were issued separately to order and were not part of an atlas" (Al-Qasimi). Gastaldi used various sources including Portolan charts of the region drawn by the 16th-century Portuguese explorers. Many details, such as the coastline of the Gulf, certain coastal towns, or the peninsula of Qatar, are mapped and named for the first time. It is the most valuable among the early maps of the region. "Although the shape of the peninsula is distorted by modern standards, the Qatar peninsula and Bahrain are both shown - details that are missing on some maps produced up to almost 300 years later" (Stuart McMinn Catalogue). - The present example is a unique variant edition, signed by Paolo Graziani, a successor of Lafreri and Duchetti in Rome and close collaborator of Pietro de' Nobili. There are extant versions recorded signed by just the latter, or by both, but this is the first exemplar to surface in the market signed by Graziani alone. - Bifolco and Ronca describe three states of the map: (1) with the signature "Giacomo di Castaldi Piamontese Cosmographo in Venetia: 1561"; (2) with the addition "Petri de Nobilibus formis" and "In Roma appresso Paulo de Graciani"; (3) with the signature of Graciani erased, but keeping the "Petri de Nobilibus formis".
