L'Ancien Régime occupe l'essentiel du premier volume, la Révolution la fin du premier et le second volume, le Consulat et l'Empire l'essentiel du tome 3 et la Restauration le reste, le récit s'arrêtant en 1816 "à la conspiration de Didier à Grenoble".
