Cercherò di spiegare perché tale fenomeno è riemerso nel cristianesimo occidentale dopo secoli di relativo oblio e affronterò l'argomento dal punto di vista antropologico, storico, filosofico, spirituale e psicologico. Nel testo troveranno spazio i pareri di esorcisti, psicologi, psichiatri, antropologi, filosofi e teologi, infine sono state incontrate anche alcune persone possedute e ormai "liberate". Ho cercato di compiere questo lavoro con rigore scientifico ma anche con un sano rispetto del mistero, cosciente del fatto che alcune delle manifestazioni osservate e documentate vanno oltre le attuali conoscenze della scienza. Un buon motivo per continuare a indagare, ma anche un motivo sufficiente per approcciare questo argomento con umiltà, cosciente del fatto che, al momento giusto, occorre sapersi fermare.Resta il fatto che le persone coinvolte vivono sofferenze inaudite: quindi a tutti loro è dovuta quell'intima comprensione legata alla considerazione positiva e al non giudizio che il padre della psicologia centrata sulla persona, Carl Rogers, ha definito "empatia".
