Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 253 pp. First edition. Scholarly study of sociology in the Amazon, Brazil; rapid ecological and socio-economic changes; maps, and black and white photographs. Wrappers with minute wear otherwise a fine copy. The book examines the driving forces behind these changes and considers current threats to the forests and their biodiversity. Various strategies for conserving forest and other resources are outlined, with an emphasis on the critical role of the private sector. The book describes major land uses, particularly mining and agriculture and assesses their environmental impacts. Particular attention is paid to development measures that help to alleviate pressure on the remaining wilderness. Perennial cropping systems are discussed in detail, especially agro-forestry, and the potential for increased agricultural production on the Amazon floodplain is explored. One of the book's major conclusions is that, despite the widespread concern about an environmental catastrophe in the region, much of the damage is concentrated in certain zones and there are grounds for hope that Amazonia can be developed in a sustainable manner. Size: 23 x 17 cm. 0.0.
