Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Limited Edition. Limited Edition (239 of 1000). 'Originally delivered at Bennington College as Lecture Thirteen in the Ben Belitt Lectureship Series.' Published in Memory of William Troy. I've rated the condition of this twenty-page booklet 'Fine.' I can't see anything wrong with it. The covers are very clean. I don't see any wear. The booklet has a stapled binding. It is very solid. The pages are nicely tight throughout, as are the covers. The pages are perfect. There is no soiling. No creasing. No markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. From the Introduction: 'Nadine Gordimer is not only an innovative storyteller but also a voice of conscience and keen observer of human predicaments. Once, in response to an interviewer's question about her work, Gordimer said, 'we all write one book, but we write it piecemeal and from very different points of view throughout our lives. You move on, you change, and your writing changes with this advancement. But in the end, for a writer, your work is your life and it's a totality.' Throughout its absorbing and increasingly challenging pages, Gordimer's 'one book,' embodying ten novels, volumes of short stories, and nearly two hundred non-fiction pieces, reveals a determination to apprehend the nature of cruelty as manifested in racism and sexism, as well as the conviction to write the truth and face the dialectic between the personal and the political.'.

No one seriously interested in the character of public knowledge and the quality of debate over American alliances can afford to ignore the complex link between press and policy and the ways in which mainstream journalism in the U.S. portrays a Third World ally. The case of Iran offers a particularly rich view of these dynamics and suggests that the press is far from fulfilling the watchdog role assigned it in democratic theory and popular imagination.
