Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. NATIVE PEOPLES OF SOUTH AMERICA, Julian H. Steward and Louis Faron, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, illustrated with B/W photos, 1959. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The brown cloth boards are in very good condition (bumping of spine, some shelf wear on bottom edges). The dust jacket is in fair condition (chipping, tears). 9 ¼ x 6, 481 pages, 34 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] This vividly illustrated book presents a cultural-historical description of the South American Indians from their first appearance in South America to the present day. The treatment of archaeological or prehistoric materials emphasizes the sociological meaning of these materials, rather than types of pottery, building, art motifs, etc. An understanding is sought as to how kinship groups, communities, states, and empires of different kinds were formed. Explanations are offered as to why the different varieties of prehistoric and modern South American Indian cultures developed. Thus, the authors delve into sociocultural theory, and advance explanations in terms of: cultural ecological adaptations; the role of surplus production; the role of diffused economic and technological elements and religious, military, and political patterns; and the developing needs of authority and social integration. While many Indians retain today somewhat aboriginal cultures in South America, many more have modified cultures resulting from western influences. The treatment of these modified cultures is in a framework of comparative perspective with similar changes among native populations in other world areas. This book is unique in the field because it treats the South American Indians not only in terms of their prehistoric and aboriginal cultures, but also in terms of their acculturation from the Spanish and Portuguese Conquest up to modern times, when a world industrial culture is reaching native populations everywhere. XX JULIAN H. STEWARD Ph.D., University of California. This author taught at the University of Michigan, University of Utah, University of California, and Columbia University before joining the staff of the University of Illinois in 1952. He has spent 3 years as Senior Anthropologist for the Bureau of American Ethnology and 5 years as Director of the Institute of Social Anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution. In this latter position he supervised a research staff in various South American countries to study post-Columbian changes among the contemporary Indians, which resulted in a series of publications by the Institute of Social Anthropology. LOUIS C. FARON Ph.D., Columbia University. This author spent 14 months in Chile living among the Araucanian Indians and has written two articles about them as well as a completed monograph which is still in manuscript form.
