Hardcover. Condizione: Neat Fine. First American edition. Frederick W. Farrar (1895 - 1903) was the Archdeacon of Westminster Abbey from 1883 to 1894, and Dean of Canterbury Cathedral from 1895 until his death. During his career, he had a very wide acquaintance. This book includes his reminiscences of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold, Charles Darwin, Professor Huxley, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Greenleaf Whittier, Cardinal Newman, Lord Lytton, Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, George Du Maurier, Lord Macaulay, Charles Kingsley, Anthony Trollope, as well as various bishops, archbishops and deans. Affixed to the front free endpaper is a card, dated December 24, 1901, from Edward L. Atkinson, the Rector of the Church of the Epiphany in New York City, presenting the book to a Miss (or Mrs.) Pegram for all she does for the Church. (Unfortunately, Atkinson was to drown soon afterwards.) This copy is near fine in the publisher's original green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to the spine and front board. Gilt at top edge. The binding is quite sound and undamaged. It shows slight rubbing to the spine ends and corners and a few tiny spots on the spine. No other marks or damage.
